Coloring Gold Embossed Images

Good morning and welcome to the CLASSroom.  I don't know about you but I have become a little overwhelmed with all the coloring choices available to us today.  I have several different kinds of markers, watercolor paint, acrylic paint, watercolor pencils, etc., but I still love using Distress Reinkers when coloring gold embossed images.  My clean and simple card today was made using the cherry blossom images from the Impression Obsession Pink Clouds by Pink Ink and the sentiment is a sneak peek from one of Julie's new sets being released on March 4th.

Secure the flowers, foliage and sentiment stamps and white cardstock and in the Mini MISTI, apply versa to the images and stamp the images.

Sprinkle the image with gold embossing powder and heat with heat gun.  I always use Ranger Super Fine Gold Embossing Powder for fine lined images.

Use a small brush and pure Spun Sugar, Peeled Paint and Vintage Photo reinkers to paint the images.  I like to use the lids of my coordinating Distress Inks as a palette for my reinkers so whatever is left when I'm finished will be there the next time I use it.

Cut out all the images with scissors to avoid having the white outlines left by die cutting.  There is nothing wrong with cutting out the images with dies and having the white outline around the images.  I just personally prefer using the images without the borders. There is a coordinating Pink Clouds die set you may want to use.

Use a Rose Pink Copic marker to create a border for the background layer that perfectly matches the pink flowers. Attach the border layer to the base image layer with ATG adhesive.

Apply mounting tape to the back of the image layer and attach to the card base.

Gently form the flowers and leaves using a molding pad and the stylus from the Garden Tool Set.

Create dimension and interest to the background image by arranging and attaching extra flowers and leaves with glossy accents.

I used the Pink Rose marker to add a little extra color to the flower centers but was very careful to use a soft touch so the alcohol ink wouldn't damage the gold embossing.

I love how elegant the colored gold embossed images look against the all white background.  The arrangement of cherry blossoms was a perfect choice to use with the Sending Good Fortune Your Way sentiment.  You are going to love the sentiments in Julie's new set. MICRO BEADS FOR CARD MAKING - Hello, Monday 01/22/2018

Today I'm sharing a NON-shaker card use for micro beads!

I adore using micro beads as shaker card filler, but here are a few more ideas, in addition to the one demonstrated in the video:

  • Try stamping and coloring an outline image, then covering it with double-sided sticky tape and coating with clear micro beads.
  • Try heat embossing bolder/solid type images over patterned paper with Sticky Stuff Embossing Powder, then coating with clear micro beads for a beaded, tapestry-like effect.

Today I pulled colors from the Color Trend Palette graphic below to create a lovely holiday card with a retro vibe, using this gorgeous Waffle Flower Poinsettia Stamp set.  As I mention in the video, the imagery in this set reminds me of vintage barkcloth from the 1940's-60's, which I adore!

When working with this beautiful stamp set, I personally found it helpful to:

  • Use a stamp positioning tool, such as the MISTI; the MISTI also makes it easy to achieve precise alignment and to stamp an image twice, to intensify ink colors.
  • Begin with the stem, which serves as a great frame work
  • Use the detail images of the stem as a reference point for aligning the leaves, and subsequently layer the poinsettia flowers, and then the petal detail image.
  • Don't be afraid to try a "non-traditional" color scheme for your holiday projects--the unexpected is a refreshing change!

BCRF Courage by Kittie Caracciolo

Good Wednesday morning and welcome to the CLASSroom. I hope you enjoyed Monday’s UNITED WE CONQUER! Ellen Hutson BCRF Fundraiser post and blog hop dedicated to the release of the Essentials by Ellen Breast Cancer Research Foundation Courage stamp & die set to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

I love creating cards with bright pops of color against an all white background. For today’s project I wanted the bright colors and simple frame to draw attention to the beautiful and touching sentiment.

My first picture shows a completed flower created using the three layering stamps and tiny center stamp. 

The watercolor paper was secured to the MISTI with the magnets. The largest background flower stamp was set in place on the paper and then attached to the cover of the MISTI.

Ink was applied to the largest stamp using a Memento Rose Bud marker.

The second stamp was lined up in place and was again stamped using the Rose Bud marker. I just wanted to add a deeper level of the same color. The third stamp was line up and stamped using a Lilac Posie marker.

I wanted to eliminate the white line left around the outer edge of the flower after it is cut out with the coordinating die. While the ink was still damp I pulled the color out away from the edges using a waterbrush.

I dried and set the colors with my heat gun.

The tiny flower center image was stamped using a Gray Flannel marker.

I finished the flower by adding color back to the darker center flower image with light touches of the Lilac Posie marker.

I repeated the same process with the foliage image but didn’t take pictures to keep from making the post so long. Since I was only using a single foliage image I inked the stamp with a Pear Tart marker, stamped it, color washed with my waterbrush like I did the flowers and then stamped it a second time to add more color back to the image. That is the beauty of the MISTI!

Next I stamped the sentiment image with Onyx Black Versafine and heat embossed with Ranger Clear Super Fine Embossing.

The frame was made using with a square frame die and attached to the card base using thin strips of mounting tape.

The flowers and foliage were cut with the coordinating dies and were gently formed with my fingers to add a touch of dimension.

The foliage sections were attached to the frame using glossy accents.

The flowers were attached to the frame with small pieces of mounting tape.

Setting the single layer flower above the foliage with mounting tape adds dimension and interest.

Ellen Hutson asked me if I wanted to participate in their "We LOVE the MISTI" week. My heart melted. The amount of support that I feel from the stamping community is very humbling.

Ellen was kind enough to send me the Mondo Peony to create this card. I stamped it with my MISTI onto three separate pieces of cardstock. After I colored the images, I fussy cut around certain parts of the peony to create my own layers. I waited to the end to add the layers.

I stamped the peony onto some masking paper. After I fussy cut around the masking paper, I placed it on my colored base. I used the Creative Corner piece to stamp my leaves off the edge.

Finally, I stamped the sentiment from the Best Mom stamp from Altenew and added some Pretty Pink Posh sequins.

Three Step Stamping with the Misti by Julia Stainton

The Misti from My Sweet Petunia is a stamping tool that will take your work to the next level. This week in the CLASSroom we've been featuring this fabulous precision stamping tool. There's so many different ways to use it and I'm excited about how it makes even a beginner stamper, stamp like a pro.

One of the techniques that the Misti makes so much easier is two-step or three-step stamping. Layering those images perfectly together can be a constant headache when stamping by hand but today I'll show you how simple it is with the Misti.

I'm also featuring the Painted Rose stamp set from Altenew. It's absolutely gorgeous and makes stunning large layered blossoms.

Here's what the stamp set looks like. You can see how the images layer together and there are beautiful sentiments included as well.

Misti-one

To use the Misti you simply open it up and hold the card stock in place with magnets. You can also place it more securely in the corners if you don't plan on stamping off the edges. I've lined it up with the included grid paper pad. My paper pad is a little wrinkly looking but it does not come that way. I had a little craft room mishap...well, flood...and it got a little damp just before I was creating this project.

To begin stamping, place your UNINKED stamp face DOWN on top of the card stock layer.

Then bring the hinged clear panel down and pick up the stamp. It's just like placing it on a large acrylic block!

Mistit-three

Open the panel, ink your stamp, then press back down onto the card stock layer. That's it!

Now to get the 2nd layer of stamping, you take the next size of rose image and place the CLEAN stamp facedown on the image. Line it exactly where you want it. It makes this sooo much easier to do when you can line it up uninked. That's the beauty of the Misti. Again, bring the acrylic hinged layer down, pick up the stamp, ink it, then press onto the card stock.

Repeat the same steps by lining up the top rose image, inking, then stamping.

It will look something like this. I've used Avery Elle pigments ink and the product links are listed below.

Once the rose is finished, move onto the second rose image and repeat all the same steps.

Yes, using the Misti will take a tiny bit longer but you're actually saving time as there will be no inky mishaps!

Once the roses are done, fill in the greenery layers by using exactly the same steps as before. I'm loving how easy this makes layered stamp images! It's always difficult to judge exactly where you are lining up the stamp when your hand is in the way.

And of course, the Misti really shines when stamping sentiments. If you've ever stamped a sentiment, then I'm pretty sure you ruined a card or layer at least once! Those sentiments can be hard to stamp perfectly lined up and perfectly inked.

To use the Misti to stamp a sentiment, first lay out your sentiment stamps where you want them. Uninked of course!

Press the top down to pick up the sentiments and make sure they are lined up perfectly straight on those grid lines. Ink the sentiment then stamp. If for some reason you didn't ink it well enough, you should be able to reink the stamp and restamp in EXACTLY the same place! Love it!

Here's what my stamped panel looked like at this point. It's pretty but I wanted to add just a few more finishing touches.

Sponge-edges

Sponging ink along the top and part of the sides gives a graduated effect and ties it together.

Liquid-applique

Next for a little dimension I added small dots of Liquid Applique. Don't let them dry but inside...give them a little blast of heat with the Heat Tool!

Puff-detail

They will puff up and make darling little white blossoms to accent the design. Easy and oh so pretty!

#throwbackthursdays - Mirror Stamping with the MISTI by Carly Tee Minner

Happy Thursday! It's Carly and I'm here for another #throwbackthursdays, where we find inspiration in The CLASSroom archives! This week in addition to learning from past posts by our fabulous team, we are celebrating one of our favorite tools, the MISTI! I can't believe how much this wonderful tool has changed and improved my stamping! No more throwing away cards with partially un-inked sentiments or images because when using the MISTI, just stamp again! And the MISTI has helped me master a technique I've been trying to get the hang of for years, mirror stamping!

Today I've created a little Valentine for my husband by mirroring the adorable car from the Essentials by Ellen Light Parade set:

To create this card, I started by stamping the mirror image of the car on a 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 piece of solar white. Here's how:

  1. Remove the black foam mat from the MISTI and place a piece of acetate holding the stamp you want to mirror on the magnetic base.
  2. Place the "mirror" stamp over the image. The "mirror" stamp needs to be a solid shape or the back of a fairly solid stamp. I used a scalloped rectangle from the Paper Smooches Mirror Block set.
  3. Close the lid of the MISTI to transfer the mirror stamp to the lid.
  4. Ink the image you are mirroring, in this case the car.
  5. Close the MISTI lid again to transfer the ink from the image stamp (the car) to the block.
  6. Quickly remove the image stamp and acetate from the MISTI. Replace the black foam and add a cardstock panel.
  7. Close the MISTI to transfer the ink on the mirror block to the cardstock.
  8. And the best thing about using the MISTI for this process, if the transferred mirror image isn't as dark as you would like, just repeat the process.

After perfecting the mirror image, stamp the car again, headlight to headlight to create "kissing" cars.

Next add some color to the cars. I did not use waterproof ink or watercolor cardstock so I added just a little messy watercoloring with Distress Ink Cracked Pistachio. Too much water will make the paper "pill".

Add a sentiment. I used little words from the Concord & 9th Best Banners set and stamped in Tide Pool ink again.

Then stamp a pink heart. I inked my heart and then misted it with water for a faux watercolor look. (P.S. I decided at the very end my heart was too messy so I layered a die cut over it.)

Finally add a few metallic details to the car tires & door handles with a Stardust gel pen.

MISTI and Large Stamps by Kittie Caracciolo

Good Wednesday morning and welcome to the CLASSroom.  I don’t know about you but I have always had problems stamping a good image when using large background stamps. This week we are featuring the MISTI and I used it to get a perfect stamped brick image on my cardstock.

Line up the cardstock on the right side of the MISTI and attach the stamp in place on the right.  Apply Glacier White pigment ink to the Distressed Brick Cover-a-Card stamp and close the MISTI.  Press down with your hands in several key spots to make sure the image is evenly stamped.

Apply white embossing powder and heat set using a heat gun.

Apply double stick tape to the back of the brick piece and attach to the card base. Die cut two Small Madison Window sections.  Use a window as a guide to draw lines for cutting out the window.

Cut out the window opening using a a craft knife.  You may need to make a couple cuts to get through two layers of cardstock.

Apply thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the window and attach it over the opening. Open the card to the inside, apply double stick tape to the back of the second window, line it up over the opening making sure it matches up with the outside window and attach. The inner window will cover up the raw cut lines and create a nice finished look.

Apply double stick tape to the back of the Grass Border and Small Grass Border and attach to the front of the fence section.

Apply thin strips of mounting tape to the back of the fence section and attach to the card base.

Assemble the Birdhouse Village pieces using glossy accents. Attach a small piece of kraft cardstock on the backside of the birdhouse to fill in and cover the hole. Apply a double layer of mounting tape to the back of the birdhouse and attach to the window. Two layers of tape will allow the house to stand out from the window and create more dimension.

Form several Tiny Flowers using the small tipped stylus and molding pad.

Die cut two or three Foliage sections and cut them apart into smaller pieces.  Attach a few flowers to each foliage piece using glossy accents. Tuck the foliage in behind the grass and attach with glossy accents. Continue adding foliage and flowers until you have filled in across the whole fence line. I added a few small pieces of foliage and flowers to the birdhouse and post to create the appearance of trailing flower vines.

Cut small squares of mounting tape, apply to the back of the Cardinals and attach them in and around the scene as desired.

The addition of the red cardinals near the top of the scene draws the eye up from the heavy fence arrangement at the bottom of the card.

I haven't made a shaker card in a while and thought I'd try making one that features "negative" die cut stamping--the MISTI made it so easy to do accurately, with no second guessing! I've also had this gorgeous birthday set by Concord & 9th for some time and have been dying to use it! I thought the gold foil access on the patterned paper (On Trend 2) really complimented the simple gold embossing of the cake just perfectly, and, of course, those Pretty Pink Posh Sequins the ultimate shaker card filler... *dreamy sigh*
