Ellen's 12 Tags of Christmas with a Feminine Twist has become a tradition and it is a joy to be asked to take part in this celebration again and share a tag with you.
To start, I was asked to choose a Pinterest inspiration image that both Stephanie and I would use as a jumping off point for our tag. I chose this gorgeous photo by Teresa from the blog Meadowbrook Farm. I loved the use of non-traditional, shabby chic colors.
(For complete challenge information head to this post.)
Today I am combining the "Tiny Trees" Clearly Besotted stamp set with a beautiful Essentials by Ellen sentiment stamp from the "Holly Jolly" set. And, of course, sewing features prominently in my tag because I love the texture and femininity it brings to any paper craft project.
Here are the steps for my tag.
1) Stamp the trees onto watercolor paper, using VersaMark and emboss with Ranger clear embossing ink.
2) Next, prep the watercolor paper, by spraying water onto it so that the paper is wet when you paint the ink onto it. This will help the color flow with ease on the paper.
3) While you could use watercolor paints for this technique, I used Distress inks in the following colors: Picked Raspberry,Tumbled Glass, Shaded Lilac. I laid down a light color wash with those colors, then to add more contrast, I also used darker aqua and violet inks in Broken China and Wilted Violet. (Please note, although it is pictured here, I didn't end up using the bundled sage ink on this tag.)
After mixing the lighter distress ink with a bit of water, I brushed a light wash of the colors over top of the embossed trees. I dried the ink using the Ranger Heat tool. After the initial, light, layer of color was dry, I mixed the darker distress inks with a bit of water and then painted those more intense colors onto the watercolor paper. I laid those darker colors down as little pools of color so that it showed a cool build up of layers. I repeated this step 2 times, drying in between each step.
After drying with the Ranger heat tool, it will look a little something like this:
4) I used a Ranger #8 kraft tag as my tag base and I stamped the "It's the most wonderful..." sentiment directly onto the tag with VersaMark. Then, I embossed with Ranger white embossing powder.
5) After cutting one edge of a piece of vellum with your favorite metal die or border punch, glue it across the bottom of the tag.
6) Next, glue the watercolor strip across the bottom of the tag. You will notice that while we stamped 3 trees onto the watercolor paper, only 2 will fit on the tag. So, pick your favorite ones. In my case I had a difficult time deciding between using the aqua and pink backgrounds, or the pink/purple backgrounds. I ended up choosing the aqua and pink backgrounds as I thought it was more true to the inspiration image if the aqua was present. Glue the watercolor strip across the bottom of the tag and then trim it to size.
7) Next, I added 2 rows of straight stitching to the top of the tag,
1 row of zig zag stitching above the narrow strip of watercolor paper,
and 1 row of zig zag stitching where the vellum and watercolor papers met.
8) The final step is to add the Prima felt bow to the top of the tag.
And, there you go! The tag is ready to adorn a present or be gifted this Christmas season!
Thanks so much for joining me today!
