Satur-YAY 10.28.2017 - You're The Balm! - Customized Lip Balm Gifts Featuring My Favorite Things

Hey everyone!  Welcome to Satur-YAY!  We're celebrating the weekend by getting our craft on!  I hope you'll join me in your creative space, get those creative juices flowing and let's get to makin'!

Today I'm using some fun new products from My Favorite Thins.  Their Sending Smooches Stamp Set, Lip Balm Window and Frame die set and Lip Balm pouches are perfect for the little gifts we are going to make today.  I thought it would be fun to combine them with the adorable Spa Day and Make It Beautiful stamp sets from the Essentials By Ellen Line.

I'll walk you through the entire creation of these cards in the video tutorial below and show you how I created a trap door to allow the recipient to easily remove the lip balm while preserving the card.  That was a magic moment when I figured out how to make that work.  :)

I used some Spectrum Noir AquaBlend colored pencils to color my stamped images today.  These pencils make it quick and easy to achieve a beautiful watercolor look.  They come in some beautiful colors as well!

I've created some custom lip balms for my project as well.  This was as easy as cutting down some patterned paper and wrapping it around the lip balm tube.  I recommend cutting your patterned paper to 1 3/4 inch by 2 1/2 if you are using the Chapstick brand standard lippies.

While pursuing online, I also found some adorable mini (and I mean very mini) lip gloss tubes.  I thought this would make a fun alternative to lip balm.  I simply decanted some of my favorite lip gloss in to the tube and sealed it up.  I love anything mini...and these adorable gold topped lip gloss tubes are no exception.  I would make sure that you're using a new lip gloss if you're giving this as a gift.

  • use typing paper and reposition-able adhesive as a mask if masking paper is not available
  • try inexpensive make-up brushes for dusting
  • stamping and die cutting colored cardstock is an easy way to create colored images with no coloring required

Altenew Crafty Friends Blog Hop + Giveaway

Hi there, my name is Carolyn Peeler and I was delighted to be asked to participate in today's Crafty Friends hop on behalf of Ellen Hutson, LLC. Ellen has carried the Altenew stamps since the company first launched, and their beautiful layered stamps are perfect for creating everything from very modern, to exceedingly vintage stamped projects.

If you've been following along with the blog hop, you should have come here from our friends at Scrapbook & Cards Today. If you're lost and want to start at the beginning of the hop, please head to the Altenew scrapbooking blog.

I choose to use the beautiful Altenew Watercolor Wonders set for my project today. It is pretty and, depending which colors you use, can create bright and fun, or warm and autumnal projects.

My inks on this card are from the Altenew Cool Sumer Night four pack (for the flower), and the Green Fields four pack (for the greenery).

The "thanks" stamp is from the "Fancy Thanks" set by Essentials by Ellen. After stamping it with the black ink from the Green Fields ink set, I then re-stamped it with clear embossing ink and embossed it with clear embossing powder. I used a MISTI in order to be sure to stamp in exactly the same spot both times.

After I completed my first card, I decided that it would be fun to create two more featuring different color families. I made one card with the Altenew Summer Afternoon four pack and the second with the following three Altenew ink colors: Frosty Pink, Coral Berry, Rouge. The greenery for both additional cards were also stamped with ink from the Green Fields four pack.

For the patterned paper, on all three cards, the top paper is the marbled background from the Heidi Swapp Magnolia Jane paper pad. And the paper strip on the left side of the card is from a piece of paper from the (discontinued) Brighton Pier 6x6 paper pad. The other patterned papers were from my stash of 'leftovers'. I can never throw things out, and saving patterned paper scraps allows me to not have to cut into a new piece when all I need is a small strip.

Color Trend - How To Incorporate the Pantone Palette "Far-Fetched" Into Your Cardmaking

We are loving Pantone's Far-Fetched color palette as our cardmaking turns from fall to winter. The shades of rust, wine & kraft are perfect for foliage and especially fun with the addition of pinks, yellow & blue. And this palette is also stunning for non-traditional holiday colors like this card that Carly created with the Modern Christmas set...

To create this card, Carly scribbled Distress Markers onto the front of an A2 card made from watercolor paper. She used a Nuvo Shimmer pen to blend & spread the color.

Carly used bright gold for the yellow in the Pantone palette, creating a gold sequin filled shaker over the blended background and topped it with gold holly leaves. The holly leaves are die cut from Craft-A-Board and coated with Nuvo Mousse.

Today I pulled colors from the Color Trend Palette graphic below to create a lovely holiday card with a retro vibe, using this gorgeous Waffle Flower Poinsettia Stamp set.  As I mention in the video, the imagery in this set reminds me of vintage barkcloth from the 1940's-60's, which I adore!

When working with this beautiful stamp set, I personally found it helpful to:

  • Use a stamp positioning tool, such as the MISTI; the MISTI also makes it easy to achieve precise alignment and to stamp an image twice, to intensify ink colors.
  • Begin with the stem, which serves as a great frame work
  • Use the detail images of the stem as a reference point for aligning the leaves, and subsequently layer the poinsettia flowers, and then the petal detail image.
  • Don't be afraid to try a "non-traditional" color scheme for your holiday projects--the unexpected is a refreshing change!

Easy Shading with Prismacolor Pencils & Therese Calvird

What an absolute pleasure it is to be here at the Ellen Hutson Classroom today!  I seriously had so much fun playing with the recent new release products that I couldn’t just stop at one card, so I have two to share with you and a video showing the process.

Today is all about adding some easy shading to a solid image using Prismacolor Pencils and these stamp sets are perfect for this!

For my first card I used the Snailed It Stamp Set and I created my own little background scene before adding the star of the show, the snail.

I kept the shading very simple in this design to show that anyone can do this!  But if you wanted, it would be easy to build on this and add so much more depth and detail.

My second card takes the technique just a little bit further.  I stamped a simple bouquet with the Thistle Stamp Set and used Prismacolor Pencils to add some shading but also to add some extra details to the flower stems and to the blooms.

To add a little extra something to the clean and simple design I did use a Wonky Stitched Oval die from My Favorite Things to add an embossed border around the design.

Twin Tip Marker Tips (plus a sneak peek!)

Hello everyone! It's Sandy Allnock here with a few tips for you - and of course a video! Those fun Twin Tip markers from Zig have some interesting tips and properties, and if we learn to use them, there's some way cool things we can do with them.

I started by using the MiniMisti to stamp the image - and in the video I show you the step by step to get the masking right. The masking paper is the Eclipse Tape - I linked both sizes in the supplies area, in case you need them all (like me!) TIP: Stamp the lady on scrap paper first, then you can figure out where to align whatever she's holding!

The brushes are by far the best I've found - especially for crafters. They hold a lot of water and color, and they still have nice fine points for all our little stamps!

If you love your Zig Clean Color pens - you may want to add a couple of these in colors you need that fine tip for, or the brush tip. The lines of markers work play nice together!

A few other notes - I used Lawn Fawn's Jet Black ink....it works for both Copic AND water-based coloring! Talk about genius, right? And the black plate I used is the Craft Assistant. It's 12x12, and I use it for anything that might spray or splooge out - it's super easy to clean up with anything like colorless blender or purell, and even some goo-gone.

4 Ways To Use Zig Art & Graphic Twin Markers from a Fellow Beginner

IMG_1873I love trying out new mediums, especially ones for coloring! The Zig Art & Graphic Twin markers are a fairly new addition to the Ellen Hutson store and I've had my eye on them, all the pretty colors were calling to me! Then my sweet friend Carissa sent me some marker-filled happy mail and it was clear that the universe wanted me to play with them. LOL!

Zig Art & Graphic Twin Markers are waterbased, dual-tipped markers. They have a flexible rubber brush tip that will not fray and is perfect for lettering, coloring and applying color directly to stamps. They also have a fine 0.8mm tip and they are available in 80 colors. You can find them in the EH store here.

#1. Color Stamped Images

Stamp outline stamps with your favorite water-resistant ink and use the markers to color. Easy-peasy and what markers are made for right? LOL! I did test the markers on 3 different cardstocks - Smooth Bristol, Solar White & Ranger Watercolor - and I had good results with all 3.

#2. Watercolor

Scribble markers on a non-stick surface like a craft mat or acrylic block. Then use a waterbrush or blender pen to pick up the color and paint the stamped image. Or scribble color directly onto stamped image and use a waterbrush/blender to blend & paint.

#3. No-Line Watercolor

Color directly on an outline image, stamp and watercolor. I love this technique! And I've had better success with this no-line technique using markers to color each section than stamping the image in one light colored ink.

#4. Direct To Stamps

Use the markers to color directly on to solid image and stamp. This might be my favorite technique! Use one color at a time or multiples and if ink has begun to dry before you have stamped, just bring the inked stamp close and give it a heavy breath before stamping. I love using my MISTI tool with this technique because I can use one color at a time and add as much & as many colors as I want. I love this technique so much that after making my little swatch, I made this card...

I love loVE LOVE Art Graphic Twin Markers due to the gorgeous array of water-based colors and durable rubber brush nib-- and enjoy using them quite frequently for watercolor effects.  I've previously shared other methods (link to a video tutorial HERE), and today's video features a THIRD method! I'm a girl that loves lots of options!

One thing I wanted to emphasize, although I am not featuring "omitting" in today's video, is that one of the huge benefits of these markers is the ability to color very specific areas directly on a stamp, due to the brush nib--something otherwise difficult to do with ink pad.

TIPS:

  • When inking an image/stamp with a water-based marker, use the broader brush nib, and hold the pen horizontally for maximum coverage.
  • Stamp images onto watercolor paper for optimal results; regular card stock will pill when water is added.
  • Clean off the stamp before changing marker colors to avoid contamination. The Lawn Fawn Stamp Shammy is excellent for quick clean-ups while you are working.
  • Keep a paper towel handy for blotting excessive water from the brush nib of the water-brush and for cleaning off the tip before working on another area/color.
  • After re-activating the ink and blending it out with the water-brush, work on another area while allowing the previous to dry. When you return to color an adjacent image, this will help minimize any bleeding of ink from one image into the next.
  • Allow artwork to dry thoroughly before adding ink spatters; this will keep your spatters "crisp" and they won't run into the artwork.
  • To create spatters, rub the brush nib of the marker against an acrylic block, close to the edge; use the water-brush to swipe/flick the color off the block and onto your project.  If you desire more spatter, apply more marker color to a "dry/clean" area of the acrylic block.  This will keep the color more intense and avoid "wicking" water up the nib and into the barrel of your marker (which can dilute the concentration of color inside the marker).
  • NUVO Drops tip:  After applying the drops, if they seem not to be flattening as much as you'd like, try holding the card horizontally, with a firm grip, and simply "slapping" the back side of the card against your work table--sometimes, that works better than thumping the back of the card with your fingers!

A Hop For Hope...because UNITED WE CONQUER!

Hi All! It's Carly here and I'm sneaking on to the blog today with a surprise hop, a hop for hope!

Last May three very special ladies organized a fundraiser to help find a cure for breast cancer. Ellen, Julie & Chaitali teamed up to find a way that they could make a difference, honor their mothers, fight for their friends and protect their daughters. They created the Courage Stamp & Die Set. 

BCRF Stamps BCRF Dies

$25 from the purchase price of each Courage Stamp & Die Set has been donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, raising over $27,000 and funding more than 1000 hours of research. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to do more.

Today I am thrilled to be joining up with a team of immensely talented women in a surprise hop. We are hopping to thank Ellen, Julie & Chaitali for all of their hard work in creating this set and organizing this fundraiser. We are hopping to raise awareness and hopefully more funds for breast cancer research. We are hopping because UNITED WE CONQUER!
