TIPS:
Make sure your watercolored art is completely dry before die cutting, to get a nice clean/crisp cut.
I used frog tape on the back of my negative die cut panel to hold the die cuts I was putting back into place, but you could also coat a piece of scrap card stock that is large enough to cover the openings with double-sided sticky adhesive.
The Zig Two Way Glue pen goes on blue but dries clear and while wet, creates a strong bond between the die cut pieces you are layering together.
For grabbing and placing exceptionally tiny die cut pieces, try using the Jewel Picker!
Burp your NUVO drops before applying directly to your project, or make them in advance on a non-stick craft sheet, allow to dry and glue them on later.
After applying NUVO drops to your project, use a piece of washi tape to hold the card shut so it will remain flat and allow the NUVO drops to dry in uniform shape, instead of "sagging".
Pico Clear Embellisher is a fantastic way to add a high gloss effect to your die cuts--the needle nose applicator really helps you get it where you want it.
I don't know how anybody could possibly be uncheered by receiving sunshine in their snail mail... ! :)
Have you heard about our United We Flourish campaign? Well, let us tell you a little bit about it...
Last November we began celebrating our 10th anniversary with the theme United We Flourish. What does United We Flourish mean? It means that our company would not be here without the amazing companies we work with, the designers who create stunning projects showcasing the wonderful products being created AND you, our fabulous customers! YOU are such a vital part of our creative community - you inspire & encourage us! Your response to United We Flourish was overwhelming and heartwarming. We heard repeatedly from you that you appreciate how our little company works together with the other manufacturers we carry to bring you their products and education showing how to use those products. To thank you for your constant support and encouragement, we have partnered with some of our friends to offer exclusive limited edition stamp & die sets!!! It is our goal to release a new set each month for the next few months. These sets will be available for a limited time (most likely 3-6 months) after each release, depending on how quickly you snap them up. The theme of these stamps sets are uplifting and fun.
Honey Bee Stamps has only been a part of the EH family for a year and a half but they are a very important part! They are our Pacific Northwest neighbors and we would definitely lend them a cup of sugar (or should we say that we would lend them a cup of Copics or stamps or dies or sequins)! We love their sweet stamp & die designs, especially their awesome sentiment builder sets. And we are lucky enough to have Honey Bee team member Taniesa in our neck of the woods. We love when she stops by!
We all need a little sunshine in our lives and this is just the set to do that. This fun sentiment builder set is all about the sun. The three big bold words, Sun, Shine and Sending can be combined with the other words in a myriad of ways to create the perfect sentiment for your card. The coordinating dies will cut out the bold stamped words and a shadow to use for layering.
This 4 X 6 set contains 25 sentiment stamps along with 6 matching dies.
The set comes packaged in the Essentials by Ellen durable clear envelope and magnetic sheet for easy storage.
This week our team, together with the Honey Bee team and some special guests, will be showing many different ways to use this set! Be sure to come back to the CLASSroom throughout the week for links to all the different spots where you can see these gorgeous sentiments in action and be certain to join and Ellen & Melissa on Tuesday, August 29th at 11am PDT as they go Live on Facebook! We will be sharing the recorded video here in the CLASSroom once it wraps up for those who do not have a FB page. Thank you so much for your incredible support - we appreciate you!
United We Flourish, because we're better together!
Sending a sunny piece of snail mail to let someone know you care is always a good idea! And the latest United We Flourish collaboration set from Essentials By Ellen & Honey Bee Stamps, Sending Sunshine, is perfect for doing just that!
The Honey Bee Sunburst Layering stencils turn a simple circle into a burst of sunlight! I used the stencil with Wild Honey Distress Ink on Bristol paper, backing it with acetate and foam mounting it to create a sparkly shaker.
#3. A Simple & Sunny Background
Simple shape dies can make an impressive background and they are super easy to use! I started this one by watercoloring 3 pieces of Bristol cardstock with Wild Honey, Tumbled Glass and Abandoned Distress Inks. Then I die cut bunches of hexagons using the Honey Bee Solid Hexagon Stack. I applied Be Creative tape to a piece of cardstock and put the background "puzzle" together by just laying down one hexagon at a time. After my panel was done, I decided to trim it down a bit before applying it to a card. A larger vellum hexagon created the perfect spot for a sentiment.
Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope you are inspired and I know we can't wait to see what you create! Tag your United We Flourish creations with #UnitedWeFlourish #EssentialsByEllen #EllenHutsonLLC and #HoneyBeeStamps.
Hey everyone! It's Carissa Wiley here with you today! Welcome to Satur-YAY! We're celebrating the weekend by getting our craft on. Today, we're putting those background stamps to good use. I'll be showing you five ways to use your background stamps.
There are a variety of different background stamps from a variety of companies. I tend to choose background stamps with patterns that I can use on a variety of types of cards. This gets me more bang for my buck. You can check out a wide variety of background stamps at the Ellen Hutson shop by clicking HERE.
Background stamps are a quick and easy way to add texture, color or patterns to your entire card front...or just a portion. I'll be walking you through all of this in the video tutorial below. Be sure to check that out. I'll also give you lots of tips and tricks along the way. Let's get to it.
Patterned Paper
I use black and white patterned paper on many of my cards. But do you want to know a secret? I actually make this patterned paper myself with my well loved Bold Diagonal Stripes background stamp from My Favorite Things.
Creating the intensity of color you want from a patterned paper can be a little tricky when using a background stamp. I like to mount my background stamp in my MISTI tool and stamp it several times to build up the intensity of the ink.
I create several pieces of this all at once and keep it in my stash to use when I need it. I tend to use small strips of it on my card projects, so it lasts me a while.
Multi Colored Inking
My next project uses multi colored inking to create beautiful backgrounds for your card projects. You can create an ombre effect or even a rainbow effect by inking portions of your stamp with different colors.
I used Distress Inks in several shades of pink to ink up my Mermaid Tail background stamp from My Favorite Things. I don't get too concerned about contaminating my ink pads. But if you're concerned, try starting with your lightest color first and move to your darkest color.
If you want to stamp your background in multiple colors, you can use your MISTI tool to ink portions and stamp it several times, cleaning between each color of ink. If you allow colors to overlap slightly, you'll get a beautiful blend between the colors.
Partial Inking
I used partial inking in combination with Multi Colored inking for this card. Instead of inking the entire stamp and covering an entire panel, I inked just a portion of my background stamp. You can see that my pattern slowly fades off and I'm left with just a portion of my card front with stamping.
In order to avoid harsh lines along the edges of my inking, I like to take a cloth and gently blot the edges of the inked area. This helps to soften any harsh lines that the ink pad may have left behind.
Emboss Resist
Emboss resist is such a fun technique for creating beautiful backgrounds. For this technique, you'll need to emboss your background image. (I'll show you this in the video tutorial below.)
Once you've heat set your embossing powder, the embossing acts as a shield. You can use dye inks, watercolor, or water based markers over the top and the embossing will resist the color.
In my example today, I embossed the pattern in white and then blended some Distress Inks over the top. This background was creating using the Concord & 9th Dotty Turnabout stamp. I'll walk you through getting your turnabout stamps ready for stamping in the video tutorial today. You can see I'm left with white where the embossing is and I have a gradient of pink on a portion of my card.
Tone On Tone Texture
Last but certainly NOT least, background stamps are great for creating tone on tone texture. Ink your stamp in an ink that's slightly darker than the card stock you're using and stamp away. This will add texture, without overwhelming the card. You can also try a watermark pad, like Versamark, to create tone on tone texture. I find the watermark pad gives better results on some colors than others.
If you want to kick your tone on tone texture up a notch, you can clear heat emboss the pattern over the paper. I've used the Hero Arts Wallpaper Pattern background stamp to create this tone on tone pattern on my gray card stock. This leaves you with a tone on tone finish that is slightly raised and shiny. It tends to intensify the color a bit, so if you want your pattern to be more subtle, you should probably just go with a colored ink on a colored card stock.
For all of my cards today, I used dies from Honey Bee to create glitter sentiments. They're my favorite. I love the sparkly and shine that they add to any card.
To enhance the sparkle, I like to finish the glitter sentiment off with a layer of Glossy Accents over the top. This add dimension and even seems to intensify that glittery effect.
So there you have it! Four different projects showing five ways to use your background stamps. It's time for you to dig out your favorite background stamp and get creating. I'd love to see what you're creating this weekend. Be sure to share it on Instagram using #EllenHutsonSaturYAY so I can check it out!
Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you've enjoyed these background stamp tips and projects! Which one is your favorite? I'd love for you to let me know in the comments below. Until next time, I hope you have a fabulous day!

Rainbows are having more than a moment, the trend seems to be here to stay and we are certainly not complaining! We are all heart-eyes for rainbows, enjoying them on our clothes & in our hair, on our toast & cookies, and more! It makes sense that we are excited to see rainbow in our cardmaking too! And we've got lots of fun rainbow products and rainbow ideas at Ellen Hutson LLC to get you started on your merry rainbow way!
#1. Stamp
One of the easiest ways to add rainbows to your cards is with some rainbow stamping! Pull out your ink pads in ROYGBIV colors and get stamping! Check out this amazing technique from Carissa about rainbow stamping...
Another fun and easy way to create a rainbow effect is to watercolor! Just pull out your favorite supplies for watercoloring and apply some gorgeous ROYGBIV puddles of color to cardstock, perhaps over an embossed background for a resist effect like Heather used in the article below...
Die cuts are also a great way to add rainbows! Use ROYGBIV colors of cardstock with any dies to build your own rainbow like this beautiful card by Heather...
Or use a rainbow die cut! For this card, I used the Paper Smooches Rainbow die and cut it from Solar White cardstock. I used Distress Inks to add my rainbow colors and then nestled the rainbow inside the O of LOVE. Many bold letters or shapes would work well so get creative! A rainbow coming out of a heart or star? Gorgeous!
And here is just a few of the fun rainbow products you can find in the EH shop:

Hi everyone! I’m thrilled to be in the CLASSroom sharing a tutorial with you. Today, it’s all about rainbows. If you know me, you know that I LOVE rainbow colors. It’s my go-to color combination. It’s so versatile and makes me happy! You can create wonderful rainbow backgrounds using Distress inks or watercolors. You can also die-cut rainbows from beautiful cardstock but this time, I want to show you an innovative way to use this combo. Why not dress your characters with rainbow colors? Like most of my designs, I tend to keep my cards clean and simple, but very colorful. I started my project by stamping the images from the newest Plant Lady set by Brandi Kincaid in black Memento ink. I masked the hand of the lady using masking paper and then stamped the trowel. I colored the images with Copic markers and cut them out using small sharp scissors. At that point, I didn’t color the apron of the plant lady. I kept this area white and left the images aside.
Next, I created a top-folded card base from white cardstock using a scoring board. I then blended Distress inks over the background with blending tools. I chose Mustard Seed, Twisted Citron and Peacock Feathers. I used a sentiment from the Plant Ladies Say stamp set, also by Brandi Kincaid. The sentiment says “Gardening is cheaper than therapy” and I just love it! I stamped it directly to the card front in black Hero Hues dye ink from Hero Arts using the Mini Misti stamping tool for a crisp print.
Now, the fun part of the project begins!
I decided to color the apron in rainbow colors. But if you want to give it a try, you can choose another piece of clothing (dress, sweater, pants, hat, shoes, etc.). The technique is always the same.
I didn’t create the rainbow directly on the image. I decided to add an additional step by creating a 3D paper piecing to give more dimension to my project. This is why I stamped the apron on another piece of cardstock. But this step is optional and you don’t need to go for it if you don’t feel comfortable with paper piecing.
Rainbows usually have seven colors but I decided to go with six colors (pink, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple). I drew five lines across the apron to create six segments. I first drew the lines using a pencil. For a more realistic look, I didn’t make straight lines.
I then went over the lines with a black Copic Multiliner.
I colored each segment with Copic markers. I used two shades for each segment to create a nice blend but one color would work fine too.
Here are the Copics I used to create my rainbow: • Pink: RV09 and R83 • Orange: YR68 and YR15 • Yellow: Y35 and Y11 • Green: YG23 and YG11 • Blue: B04 and B01 • Purple: BV13 and BV11
For more depth, I always add a lot of shading to my coloring. I used grey shades to accentuate the fold of the apron. I also went over the stamped lines with a black marker.
Next, I fussy cut the rainbow apron with sharp scissors and ran a black marker over the edges. I then colored the apron of the plant lady in grey (C5 or C6) and attached the rainbow apron over it.
Depending on the project, foam pads can be too thick (even thin foam squares). As I just wanted a little bit of dimension, I attached two pieces of cardstock at the bottom back of the apron and glued the apron piece to the plant lady.
To finish off my card, I fixed the plant lady as well as the plant to the card front using double-sided foam tape for more dimension. I added a layer of Wink of Stella clear shimmer to the rainbow apron. Supplies:
Hi Friends! Carolyn Peeler with you today. I hope you've been enjoying release week - have you already picked out your favorite thing? Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love using patterned paper on my craft projects. I am a huge fan, so was excited when I found out that Ellen would be adding paper to her Essentials by Ellen product line. If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, it's your lucky day! Today I have a preview of the fabulous Modern Graphics paper collection, designed by Julie Ebersole to share with you, so check it out!
Watch in HD on our YouTube Channel HERE! Thanks for watching, subscribing and giving us a thumbs’ up!
Julie adds:
“I love background patterns and prints that aren’t necessarily gender or occasion specific. I also love that the abstract spots pattern resembles an animal/leopard print. The strands pattern could be balloon strings OR woodgrain, the rectangle pattern can be filled in quickly/easily with markers, in a random fashion. The falling confetti dots paper can be cut and rotated for use vertically or horizontally—they can also be used to represent snow fall or a starry sky! The scattered dots are an awesome way to add random, yet subtle pattern to a project.
I also tend to reach frequently for black and white patterns since they often already compliment the project I’m working on, or can be easily modified or customized! For example, any ink color can be sponged, spritzed, brayered or stamped over the top of these patterns. These unique patterned papers can also be foiled using heat transfer foils and a laminator.”
Thanks for joining me today, and if you make something with these papers, I hope you'll come back and leave a link in our comments so that we can check them out :)
As I sign off, here are the links to the products featured in this post. Have a great weekend!

Hi everyone! Thanks for stopping by. Today we're celebrating Neat & Tangled's 5th Birthday by taking part in a very special blog hop. It's a week long blog hop celebration and it's going to be a lot of fun! If you want more information, you can always head to the Neat & Tangled blog.
Today I'm using the new Hooray stamp from Neat & Tangled along with some Distress Oxide inks to do a little rainbow stamping. I love this technique and it works especially well for large sentiment stamps like this Hooray stamp.
While I chose to do a rainbow stamping technique (ROYGBIV makes me a very happy girl), you can change up the colors to create your own color gradient. Try a sunset type gradient with pinks, oranges and yellows. Or try an ombre effect with several tones of the same color.
Now as you'll see, I was having so much fun, I got a little carried away. I created several cards. Since the cards are really ALL about that rainbow greeting, you don't need much else to make these cards really special.
I used the coordinating Hooray dies to die cut my sentiments after I stamped them. I love that the die set comes with both the word and the shadow, allowing you to use them in so many ways.
I love the look of rainbow greetings paired with some black and white patterned paper. I used the new Essentials by Ellen Modern Graphics Paper Pack for some of my backgrounds. Love the way those colorful images pop off that bold black and white patterned paper.
Since the Distress Oxide have the unique hybrid property, they are also great for stamping on darker colored card stock. I stamped the same rainbow greeting on some Neenah Desert Storm card stock. I love this look too!
You can also achieve this rainbow stamping look with other stamps as well. I used the same technique to ink up the All The Sprinkles stamp (also new from Neat & Tangled).
I'll show you exactly how I did this in the video tutorial below. Be sure to check it out.
As a part of their birthday celebration, Neat & Tangled is giving YOU gifts....well, at least a chance to win them. They'll be choosing winners from the comments all along the blog hop. They're giving away one $100 gift certificate, and two $50 gift certificates to the Neat & Tangled online shop. Be sure to leave a comment at every stop on every day of the hop for more chances to win. Winners will be announced on Sunday, August 13, 2017 on the Neat & Tangled blog.
For your next stop along the hop, please visit Teri Anderson's blog by clicking HERE. If you get lost along the hop, you can always start from the beginning at the Neat & Tangled blog.
Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you enjoyed these projects! Until next time, I hope you have a fabulous day!

Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by today. Today, I'm going to be creating a card with the Lawn Fawn Magic Color Slider die. This die is such a fun and easy way to create a DIY interactive card. I love interactive cards!
The Magic Color Slider die set has a lot of pieces, and it might seem a little overwhelming when you first look at them. But I'm going to show you exactly how to use all of these pieces in the video tutorial below. Be sure to check that out.
Once assembled, you're left with a tabbed piece that slides up, revealing a colorful image behind. It really is magical. I've chosen to have my slider reveal a colorful image beneath, but you could try a lot of variations on this. Maybe instead of just color underneath, a whole new scene is revealed. There are lots of possibilities for this die. It's got my wheels turning!
also love this die set because there are several pieces that can be used on other cards as well. The stitched pieces used to cut the window on the Magic Color Slider are great accents for any card. There is also a hello sentiment and a fun banner. These are dies that you can use on so many card projects!
Beneath my slider, I've used my Zig Art & Graphic Twin markers to color my scene on to some Bristol Smooth card stock. This paper is perfect for blending water based markers like the Zigs. I was able to create seamless blends with very little effort. Just remember, using the right paper for the markers you're using is KEY! While the Bristol isn't ideal for Copic coloring, it works like a dream when using these Zig markers.
I finished my card off with a few finishing touches. I added a few black enamel dots to bring in more of the black that is found in my stamped image and in the patterned paper I adhered beneath my heat embossed sentiment. I also added a bit of twine to the top of the slider portion of my card. Look ma! No glitter, no sequins, no gold! Can you even believe it?
Here's a look at the card as it slides up to reveal the colored scene beneath. Such a cool card!
As I said earlier, I'll be walking you through this in the video tutorial below, so be sure to check it out. I've also included links to all the projects used in this project below. I've even listed the marker colors I used individually. :)
Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you've enjoyed this look at the Lawn Fawn Magic Color Slider Die Set. It's a new favorite of mine for sure! Until next time, I hope you have a fabulous day!

And we love other interactive cards too like pop-ups, sliders, spinners and more!
What kind of interactive card is your favorite? What would you like to have more tutorials on? We'd love to hear from you!
I used the Diagonal Window Die to make a Surprise Thank You card for the CLASSroom a couple of years ago. I wanted to do something different with it for my project today. I did a search in the CLASSroom looking for inspiration and I found Julie’s great post and video showing how she created a collapsible style shadow box card. I love using frames for my scene cards and loved the idea of creating a frame using the window die that would add dimension without the heaviness of mounting tape. I attached most of the elements of the scene flat to the card base and they created noticeable dimension yet could still allow the card to be mailed in a regular envelope.
Start by scoring an additional set of score lines to each section 1/4” inside the original score lines. Check out Julie’s video to see this step more clearly.
Use a craft knife or scissors to cut where the diagonal lines intersect.
Turn the paper over and fold back each triangle section along the main score line and create a firm crease with your bone folder. Do you own a Teflon Bone Folder? It’s a wonderful tool and doesn’t leave a shine on your cardstock.
Fold the triangles forward on the 1.4” score line and firmly crease with your bone folder.
Sponge in a cloudy background with Tumbled Glass ink using an ink blending tool and cloud template. I love this small cloud template made by Inky Antics. I flipped it from front to back repeatedly as I worked my way down the page so my clouds wouldn’t look so uniform.
Apply glossy accents to the back of the grass border and attach to the card base.
Apply 1/8” double stick tape to the back of the small grass border and attach to the card base.
Cut off the extra grass border on both sides.
Apply double stick tape to the back of the branches corner and attach to the card base.
I used Antique Linen and Vintage Photo inks to watercolor the images using a Zig Waterbrush.
I cut the pouch and baby section of the image off to paper piece over the base to add a bit of dimension. I fussy cut the images out with my snips instead of die cutting so I could eliminate the outer edge for the paper piecing.
I used rolled up 3/8” glue dots to attach the baby pouch section over the base image.
I stamped the butterflies twice using the versa ink and embossed. I cut the little front wing section off and pieced over the base butterfly to add a tiny touch of dimension. Yes…..my fingers were too large to cut those tiny pieces well and my eyes are too old to see well…but I just couldn’t help myself. I had to do it. LOL! I attached the butterflies to the base using glossy accents.
The kangaroo was tucked in behind the grass and attached with a piece of mounting tape. I added the taller grass sections to add interest to the scene and attached with glossy accents.
I attached a piece of 1/2” inch of double stick tape to each triangle section, set the scene base inside the opening and secured in place with the taped triangle sections. I used ATG adhesive to attach the framed scene to a green A2 card.
I hope you enjoyed seeing the new G’Day Mate kangaroo image used with the Diagonal Window Die in this collapsible scene card. It’s lots of fun.
