Hi everyone! I am beyond thrilled and excited to be this month’s Guest Designer on the CLASSroom blog! I’ve been busy busy busy creating cards for the festive period, particularly for my Advent Calendar Extravaganza event (check my blog for more details – Ellen Hutson is a sponsor!), and today I have a fun Christmas project for you, creating a card and coordinating tag, which also helps stretch some of your supplies!
Ever since I saw the Stitches Cover Plate from the 2016 Essentials by Ellen Winter release I knew I wanted to ink it up! Yes, I said ink it up! This is a great technique to impress ink into your cardstock for a true letterpress look!
I wanted a very white cardstock that would also take a good impression, so the Essentials by Ellen Letterpress Paper could not be more perfect!
I tapped my Versafine Smokey Gray ink pad all over the raised areas of the Stitches Cover Plate, then ran it through my Big Shot for a beautifully impressed texture and pattern.
I then ran the panel through my Big Shot again, this time die cutting a deer out of it using the Leaping Deer Die. I kept the positive die cut (the deer shape) off to one side to create my tag later, and will be using the main negative die cut (rectangular panel) for my card.
Next up, I die cut the Holiday Words Dies from some gold glitter paper.
With all my main pieces ready, I stapled my words to my impressed panel using my Tiny Attacher.
I wanted some glitter to appear underneath the main panel, so I cut a piece of charcoal glitter paper that was just the right dimensions to peep through the negative die cut.
The texture of the reverse of the glitter paper is pretty slick, so I covered it thoroughly with some Be Creative Tape so it won’t budge!
With my glitter paper adhered to my card base, I popped up the main panel for some dimension and then set about finding some embellishments. I loved the snowflake sequins I had in this sequin mix so I dug them out of the packet.
I applied some Multi Matte Medium to the centres of the sequins
then adhered them in place on my card.
The finished card has glitz and a touch of dimension and texture and is still quite mail-friendly!
Now, remember we set the positive die cut aside? It’s time to turn that into a tag!
I took a hole punch and punched a tiny hole in the reindeer’s ear.
I repeated the same with a second die cut ‘Joy’ word.
I pulled out some of my favourite May Arts Metallic String (though it must be the first time in an aeon since I used the silver instead of the gold!).
I cut a length of the string and knotted the ends together, then thread it through from the back of my ‘Joy’ word.
I tied another knot a little further along, then thread my reindeer through from the front of his ear.
I tied a second knot just behind his ear, so that the reindeer stays in place relative to the ‘Joy’ word.
I added a backer piece to the ‘Joy’ word, die cut from white cardstock, just to make everything neat, but that’s a totally optional step. Still, I like how it gives some dimension as mirrored with the card!
I hope you’ve enjoyed your time with me here at the CLASSroom and have learned a couple of tips and tricks from my process. Thank you so much to Ellen for having me here again – it was truly an honour!
