Good Wednesday morning and welcome to the CLASSroom. For my project today I had a wonderful time playing with the Cosmo Cricket WIP Book Art Deck and the Daniel Smith Watercolor Essentials. I am impressed with the quality of watercolor paper and there are so many wonderful pre-resisted images, designs and sentiments in the WIP (work in progress) Art Deck. This was my first time having the opportunity to use Daniel Smith’s watercolors and I have fallen in love. I am not a great water colorist but these paints are so beautiful to work with that I almost felt like I could be.
I chose this big flower from the Art Deck because I love that the image is gold embossed. As I began to add color to the image I was excited to see white embossed lines popping up on the petals. I chose Pyrrol Scarlet and New Gamboge paints to work with.
I used a mini mister to lightly mist the image with water to prepare the paper and help move the paint more easily.
I began by adding a light wash of the New Gamboge color to the image.
Next I added more depth of color to the flower by applying the same paint mixed with much less water.
I mixed a small amount of the Pyrrol Scarlet paint in with the New Gamboge and began applying it to the center of the flower.
I worked my way out from the center of the flower adding deeper mixtures of color. I almost squealed with delight as the beautiful mix of colors were adding depth to the flower.
I kept adding the darker mixture of color until I felt it looked alive and more natural. A little color slipped out of the lines but I didn’t care. Sadly the pictures do not show off how much color variation and detail there really is.
I wanted to create a simple card layout that would allow the total focus be on the flower. I couldn’t find any color of cardstock as vibrant as the orange and reds on the flower so I painted a border on a separate piece of watercolor paper with the same mixture of paint.
I attached the flower to the border layer with ATG adhesive.
I stamped the sentiment from Julie’s newly released Lovely sentiment set on vellum with versa and embossed with gold embossing powder and attached it to the flower layer. The flower layer was attached to the card base with mounting tape.
“If Flowers Could Hug I Would Send You A Thousand”. I love this sentiment and there are several more in Julie’s Lovely set that are perfect for flower projects.
Thanks so much for coming by and I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. You’ll find all the links below to the products I used on my project today.
