If you're tired of the same old rectangle A5 size card, then today's project is for you! I love mixing things up now and again and creating a shaped card. It's super easy with dies and today's hexagon card not only has a great shape, it has a fun fold as well!
Does this card feel like spring or what? All those pretty layers of patterned paper and die cuts give a beautiful mix and match look.
Mixing patterns is simple when you use a paper line. All the hard work is done for you, just decide on your favorite prints and they should all mix and match. Today I'm using the beautiful DIY Home 6x6 paper pad by Jen Hadfield from Pebbles. I have to tell you, the cover of it doesn't do the line justice. There are SO many stunning prints to use!
A great way to keep a design cohesive when you use a lot of prints is to use a die or series of dies all in the same shape. I absolutely adore this Nested Hexagon die set from We R Memory Keepers. A hexagon is such a great shape and it's really difficult to make yourself. And seriously... FIFTEEN graduated dies are in this set. That makes them less than $1.50 per die which is a crazy awesome deal.
I used various sizes of the larger hexagons to cut out these paper from the line. I'm not sure if you can tell in this photo but I did skip a die size. I like to make some layers a little larger in spacing than others.
The card base is die cut from Solar White card stock and the largest die. Fold the sheet of card stock in half and crease edge. Place fold along one edge of the hexagon but make sure it is INSIDE the die cut line. You don't want two pieces for your card base. You need that hinge fold. I like to secure it with washi tape as you can see here before I run it through my die cutting machine. I don't like surprises and shifting can occur.
So here's the white card base. I'm digging the hexagon shape!
Next up layer on those pretty die cuts to the card front. Die cut the word Hello and set aside.
Now the fun, fold part. You need 6 hexagon die cuts of the same size to create the folded flower/star accent. The paper I used was graduated so I have different shades of green in my image.
For each small hexagon, fold once to the middle and then twice to the middle. Crease well with a bone folder. Do this six times.
Arrange your folded "petals" to form the shape. Adhere to the card front center.
Finish off the card center with some pretty white paper flower from Maya Road, some jute twine, a Pearl Ball Pin and a sweet little silver key, also from Maya Road. Die cut leaves from the Essentials by Ellen Bold Blossom Stand Alone Die Set and add them to the card front.
You may have noticed that the Hello die didn't make an appearance on the card front. It just seemed to look better without a sentiment. The solution was to put it on the inside of the card and also add a pretty striped hexagon layer to finish it off perfectly. Often we forget about the interior of the card and it's always a beautiful addition to add detail there.
Thanks so much for joining me today in the CLASSroom! Have a blessed Easter weekend and a beautiful spring!
