Hi Everyone! It's Carly here for another edition of #throwbackthursdays! Today's project started with two containers of beautiful Hero Arts embossing powder sitting on my desk, Platinum and Brass. I knew I wanted to create something with these colors but I really wasn't sure what until I found this awesome article written by Ellen:
Painting with Embossing Powders by Ellen Hutson
I loved Ellen's technique of using multiple colors of embossing powder on the same image so I decided to use the same technique to create a background. Here's it is:
1. I started with a 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 piece of black cardstock and I stamped my Penny Black Swirled background stamp in VersaMark ink. While the ink was still wet I covered the image with embossing powder using a plastic spoon to sprinkle each color, first Platinum, then Brass and finally Pink. I shook off the excess into a paper coffee filter to save. TIP: lots of background stamps would work for this technique, look for stamps that are not too delicate and have black lines.
2. I used a heat gun to melt the powder and look how pretty it turned out:
3. Then as Ellen suggested in her article, I stamped my background again and embossed it using the mixed up powder from step 1. Again I shook off the excess into a coffee filter and tied it into a bundle to save it for later (as I just learned from Ellen, storing powders in plastic containers can create static).
Look how pretty it turned out the 2nd time:
I loved the mixed up look so much- more gold in one light, more pink in another and overall almost rose gold. I decided to use the mixed powder panel as the background for my card.
4. I created a flower accent with the Catherine Scanlon Whimsical Flower stamp set and some no-line watercoloring. I won't give you any instructions on that because I'm still just learning (if you follow me on Instagram, you have seen me practicing).
5. I paired my flower with die cut leaves from the Essentials by Ellen Bold Blooms Matching set and a simple Twisted Citron Distress Ink watercolor wash.
6. The sentiment is from Essentials by Ellen Autumn Acorns, stamped in Versafine Onyx Black, cut into a strip, torn on the edge and given a little coat of Gold Stickles.
Happy Thursday!
