I'm always up for exploring new products and techniques. Recently the Prima Water Soluble Oil Pastels caught my eye and I just had to order them and give them a try. One of the things that intrigued me about this product was the the oil pastels were water soluble. I'd always been taught that oil and water don't mix. Of course I had to try them to see if they worked!
One of the things I wanted to try using the oil pastels on was fabric. Today's project shares a scrapbook page created from a watercolor oil pastel background on beautiful embossed canvas. I love all the texture this creates and the resist is so pretty.
To start off with, I chose a few colors of pastels to create my background. These pastels are so vibrant and have a beautiful texture.
The color is easy to apply to fabric or paper just by scribbling it onto the layer. Add in colors where you want them. This background is so easy that anyone can do it.
To blend the colors on fabric, simply add water. You can use watercolor brushes or mist the pigments to blend them together. For this project I actually used both to get my colors blended the way I wanted them. This will leave the canvas very wet. I had placed a Craft Mat under my project to protect my work surface. Blot up excess water with a paper towel and allow to dry. I actually hung my canvas on the line for an hour. You can also press the fabric with an iron at a very low setting to flatten it well.
My next step was to add a photo area to my canvas. The She Art Coffee Filter Sheets are perfect for this and I adhered a 6x6 piece (with top edge torn) to the right side of my canvas. Multi Medium works great for this and I love how some of the color shows through the coffee filter layer.
I always love adding lots of embellishments to my projects. One of the things I used on this one was some plastic Basic Grey Capture Photo Frames. These came with a plastic protective coating on them that you just peel off.
Arrange all the layers to suit you and then adhere them to the canvas. When adhering things to fabric, I often use either a sewing machine or a hot glue gun.
Gold accents are always a fun way to glam up a project. I love this gold hastag sticker and the gold glitter text on the vellum envelope by Cosmo Cricket.
My journaling was adding in on the sweetest stitched tag from Studio Calico. Isn't it darling? And I didn't even have to pull out my sewing machine!
