I'm not sure what your house is like but mine, well, it's like Grand Central Station some times. Everyone is coming and going with different schedules. It can make things chaotic and disorganized when what I really want is for my home to be loving, peaceful and beautiful.
I decided that what I needed to do was to make a creative project. When in doubt, create!
Did you know that there's a super cool metal sheet in the Ellen Hutson shop? I've been wanting to create something with it for quite some time and since I'm needing to solve some organizational woes, this seemed like the perfect time. The metal sheet is 12 inches square making it easy to find a picture frame for. Simply remove the glass from the frame and insert the metal sheet into the frame and you have a lovely classic magnetic board to keep you organized. If you like to keep things ultra simple, stop here.
But if you want to have some creative fun, why not make some custom magnets to go with it? I made seven of my own to go with the board. I created a bit of an eclectic mix just to give you some ideas on creating magnets with fun crafting supplies.
To start with you need magnets to place on the back of each creative piece. I used the Basic Grey Large Magnetic Snaps. You can also use the smaller sized ones as well but I wanted to make sure they could hold anything I threw at them this school year. In the above image you might have noticed these come with + and - symbols on them. This is just important if you want to use them as snaps. You can adhere either of them on the back of your magnet projects and they will work. They come with an adhesive on the back but to keep things really holding well I used a hot glue gun.
My first magnets are super simple. These would be fun for the kids to make with you or if you like a clean and sassy look. I love these Wood Tokens from Maya Road. They are adorable and trendy and you can hot glue magnets on the back of these in seconds.
Flair also works great as magnets. The sweet little chalkboard flair magnet is from the American Crafts DIY Adhesive Chalkboard Badges. I've linked it here as I missed it in the supplies below. Oops!
So let's step it up a bit. I love acrylic embellishments and this Tim Holtz Facet piece is beautiful. To add some color I simply adhered some patterned paper to the back of it with Glossy Accents. It doesn't take long to dry and then you can trim away the excess paper.
To make it even prettier, I added on a sentiment with some Tim Holtz rub-ons. If you've never used rub-ons they are super easy. Just cut out the area you want to transfer, remove the backing, rub on the top of the image firmly and then peel the top transfer sheet away.
You can also get a similar effect just by covering some chipboard with patterned paper and rub-ons.
For this pretty magnet I used up some embellishments I had on hand and layered them together from largest to smallest. Hot glue holds it all together.
My last magnet is a tag shape that's been embellished with layers of goodies.
It's another chipboard piece magnet but this time I've created my own with a die cut machine, the Tim Holtz Tiny Tabs & Tags die. Craft-a-board is a great chipboard product that is carried in the Ellen Hutson store. I love how it's lighter than the traditional grey chipboard it's great for die cutting!
To put the tag together, I also die cut a piece of patterned paper and adhered it on top. Like the other magnets, I've simply layered all kinds of embellishments together for this vintage look.
Check out the supplies below or use up some of your own embellishments to create this project. I love finding new ways to use them and getting them off the card and onto a home dec project is always fun!
