One of the things I adore about truly water-based coloring tools, such as markers, ink pads and their respective reinkers/refills, is the options and versatility built right into them!
I grabbed a few of my favorite colors of Distress reinkers I own and used them for this wet-on-wet background effect and I LOVE how it turned out and, of course this technique is one I will rely on again and again because it's just so easy!
TIPS:
- Use low-tack/removable tape to keep your watercolor paper flat; a clipboard or similar surface is great because you can easily set the whole thing aside/out of the way to air dry while you work on the rest of your project.
- To avoid tearing your paper surface when removing the tape, lift up the end and fold it back on itself and pull slowly. (Pulling the tape "up" and away, quickly, usually causes tearing.)
- Try limiting the colors to 3 that work well together so you don't end up with "mud".
- Use watercolor paper; regular card stock cannot handle that amount of water and will pill and deteriorate (not a pretty sight...)
- Paint a puddle of clean water where you want color to go; when you add your water-soluble coloring medium, it should stay within the confines of that puddle unless you deliberately push the color outside of it.
- If the drops of color don't "wick" or "bleed" out on your puddle of water in the direction you like or as fast as you like, try tilting the paper, or adding more water or try pushing the color around with a paintbrush.
- If the color is too strong, use a clean paper towel to absorb some of the color and create a softer, washed-out look.
- If your glittery die cut word is too delicate, try backing it with additional diecuts of card stock; this will give the whole piece more support and make it much sturdier.
- Diffusing the background with even just a small piece of vellum can help prevent the die cut from "disappearing" into the background.
