Once again we welcome the extraordinary colorist and oh, so sweet Jill Foster to our blog! The anticipation of opening the emails to see what each designer has created is something I look forwards to each year now at this time. I know without a doubt that whatever it is that Jill creates will make me smile - the colors she uses just make me feel happy inside! This year is no different - these sweet tags are a gift in and of themselves.
You can find additional inspiration on the Studio Sessions Art blog which Jill shares with her friend Elizabeth as well as on the Penny Black blog.
Thank you Jill for joining us again this year and inspiring us with your creativity and use of color! -Ellen
Hi everyone! It’s such a treat to be a part of this fabulous event here at Ellen Hutson. When I thought about adding a “feminine twist” to my tags, I immediately thought about Penny Black’s newest fashion girl stamps, Dreaming Of and Spruced Up .
My love for these fashionistas is directly proportional to my growing love of watercolor… so why not combine the two?
I began by stamping Penny Black 40-365 Dreaming Of using Watering Can ink onto a tag cut from watercolor paper. Because this ink color is slightly lighter than black, it provides a daintiness and an almost sketchy look to the lines of the image.
Next, I added color to the areas I intended to be the darkest. I used Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Art GRIP Aquarelle Watercolor Pencils.
Then I did my favorite step… blending with water. I applied water to the white/open areas first then worked into the colored areas, allowing the water to wick away the color and blend naturally.
I followed same process to paint the background and ground. I colored the skin with Copic Markers, using care not to allow the marker tip to touch the stamped ink.
To finish things off, I embellished with paint splatters, a stamped sentiment, ribbon, twine, and a self-adhesive pearl.
I love to stamp several tags and have them ready to color while relaxing and watching TV with family. (Doesn’t everyone color on football Sundays? J) That being said, I couldn’t stop at just one tag… here’s a bonus!
I colored her whimsical dress using the same techniques shown above.
Thanks so much for joining me today, my friends. Hugs and happy stamping! -Jill
