I really love how soft and delicate this design turned out, with the pine branch die cut partially overlapping the window edge. Can't seem to get enough of that woodgrain embossed paper, either... *LOVE*

This is also one of my favorite layouts for branchy/long types of die shapes. :) In the past, I've often used a 1 3/8" square punch to create a rectangular opening, and just punched, slide it further up the paper and punched again,taking care to make sure the edges are aligned and overlapping; that works great in a pinch, but you do have to remember that you will be limited by how far the punch will reach and can't always get the window on your panel or card front exactly where you'd like it... For example, dead-centered on your card front? It ain't happenin'. 

This is where dies like this Nesting Card Templates set by Lifestyle Crafts or the Nesting Rectangle set come in handy and can make your (card-makin') life a lot easier.

I'm totally ready to get into holiday card making mode! How 'bout you? Are ya' feelin' it? I have so many ideas rollin' around in my head--I don't know that I'll be able to do them all!  I s'pose that's not necessarily a bad thing, tho... ;)

Dripping Gold - A Card by Julia Stainton

Gold is back!

Back on trend & I love it!

For a while, silver seemed to reign but gold is back and just in time for the holidays. Autumn is such a golden time with the warm rich colors of harvest and it blends seamlessly into the golden sparkling time of Christmas.

Today's card project isn't holiday themed but I think gold is classic for all the year through. Feel free to take some of these ideas and change up the design to make it work for your holiday  projects this year.

 

To create this project I started with a chipboard butterfly. It's not currently available in the shop so you can create your own by die cutting some chipboard with a die or using an alternate chipboard shape. This card is going to give you lots of ideas for adding gold into your projects and to coat the chipboard in a beautiful soft gold, I colored it with a Krylon Gold Leaf Paint Pen. These pens are easy and beautiful to use. Here's a few tips...

• shake pen well before starting to smooth out the paint inside
• depress the nib on scrap paper to prime the nib and get the paint flowing
• add color as desired...if nib gets dry, simply depress again to pump up the paint flow
• cap these pens tightly so they don't dry out

If you've been on Pinterest lately you'll notice that gold dipped is also a hot trend. Well...how about a double whammy of gold? Gold dipped with gold glitter. Yes please!!!

To apply the glitter smooth on some Glossy Accents over the area you want to adhere the glitter to. Sprinkle with gold glitter, remove excess and voila! It's soooo purdy!

Next...how about some gold inked edges. I haven't quite inked the edges yet in the above shot but the new Hero Arts Shadow Gold Ink is so lovely! After covering the chipboard tag with patterned paper, I simply brushed the edges of the tag with the ink pad, direct to paper.

Now while I'm chatting about the patterned paper, here's another quick thing to note: I started off with the two GORGEOUS patterns of paper from the Cosmo Cricket Creative Girl 8x8 paper pad. They are the ones on the BASE of the card. I needed a third print to cover that tag and darn...nothing else from that same pad was exactly what I was looking for. Going through my paper stash for something could have taken me FOREVER. Not what I had in mind. I wanted something now. So...where did I start looking? The same paper manufacturer of course! You'll find that a lot of paper manufacturers use similar styles and color hues throughout their different lines.

Did it work? Yes! The first pad I went through was the Cosmo Cricket Sweet Dispositioin pad and I found a print that was just the ticket immediately.

Onto my fourth way to add gold to this project...

How about a sweet little glass vial of gold glitter?! Just fill it and cork it!

I like to assemble all the embellishments I plan to use before I start gluing things down. They are so pretty, even just scattered on the desk.

And here they are adhered to the card front. You'll notice I added gold a fifth and final time by using these beautiful premade gold letters stickers. If you like things quick and easy with little mess, these are a great way to get that gold look.

I often forget to use my embossing folders, but they are such a great way to add texture and interest to a card--perfect for backgrounds! This is one from a favorite pair of Sizzix folders and I love that it has a leaf-like motif.

There I go again with white leaves for fall... but in FELT!  Love that this felt cuts like buttah, too! ;)

Fall Scrapbooking by Sharon Harnist

Hello and happy Fall, everyone! Cooler weather has finally made it down to the U.S. Gulf Coast, so it inspired me to do a little scrapbooking. I knew as soon as I saw this great "You are my sunshine" sentiment in the My Mind's Eye Chalk Studio patterned papers, I would use it on a scrap page of my daughters . . . I used to sing the song to both of them when they were little!  

I used the 6x6 paper pad and My Favorite Things Die-Namics Stax Pierced Rectangle (largest) was the perfect size to die cut it:

I am LOVING MFT's growing line of pierced edge dies (circle, rectangle, square and tag) ...  you can find them all HERE in Ellen's store. I know you'll be seeing a lot more projects from me using these sweet dies! And take a close look at how nicely they are packaged for you -- already on a magnetic storage sheet!  Hopefully you can see the great pierced edge detail by clicking on the photos for a larger view.

I also found this set of MFT's fabulous Blueprints dies that has some pierced/stitched elements in them ... Blueprints 1.  I used the scalloped rectangle from this die set to cut a mat for the sunshine sentiment from Memory Box Jack-O-Lantern Notecard. It is popped up with Copic's X-Press It Foam Tape over the photo:

The pierced/stitched long rectangle piece divides the photo of my girls from the great leaf embellishments, and I used the stitched circle element to stamp Fall 2013 (from MFT's Document It Days and Dates clear stamp set).

Since moving closer to the coast and more humidity, I've discovered my usual old faithful adhesive hasn't been holding heavier cardstock as well, so Copic's X-Press It 1/4-inch Tissue Tape has become my go-to adhesive for everything! Since it's acid-free, it's perfect for scrapbooking:

Ellen's Satin Silver Sequins were scattered in the lower left and top right of the page -- they pick up the grey tone of the dotted patterned paper and are held in place nicely with X-Press It's Glue Marker:

Tim Holtz's Tattered Leaves were die cut from more coordinating Chalk Studio patterned paper (sage and brown colors, to pick up tones in the photo) and were placed on a Prima ATC Stitched Canvas. My 8-inch page base is made from Hero Arts Layering Paper Mixed Sunshine -- to help resonate that great sunshine sentiment!

Hi Everyone! I’m so excited to be in the CLASSroom today! I love creating colorful projects year round. Sometimes playing with bright colors in my studio is the perfect pick me up during the cloudy rainy days here in Seattle.

My card today uses the adorable My Girl 6x6 Paper Pad by American Crafts paired with the equally cute and fun stamp set Bitty Bungalows by Paper Smooches.

I used the coordinating Bitty Bungalow dies to show one of my favorite techniques! To create interest and the idea that the houses are far apart, I put one house
behind a die cut and one on top.

Let me show you how I like to place stamped images behind die cuts!

First, I die cut a piece of kraft cardstock with the coordinating die for the house I wanted to use. Next, I stamped the house on a separate piece of small white cardstock. It doesn’t have to be cut perfectly or stamped straight as long as you have a good amount of white space around the entire image.

Next, turn the kraft paper over and add lots of dimensional adhesive close to the die cut image. This will keep your die cut popped up and safe from being smashed in the mail!

Finally, turn your kraft cardstock over and match it up with your stamped image. If you have any excess white cardstock showing around the edges go ahead and trim it off. It’s that easy!

Putting together the rest of the card was super easy! Next, I stamped, die cut and paper pieced the mushroom house. I LOVE having dies to match so all my borders are evenly cut. I then mounted my two houses on cute rainbow patterned paper from the My Girl paper pad. The card was finished off with a few die cut hearts covered in
Glossy Accents, a little twine and a sentiment to pull the whole design together!

I’ll leave you with one final tip! When arranging the hearts I ordered them from largest to smallest across the card in a triangle formation and in rainbow order. This
gives the card flow, balance and direction and ties all the colors back to the rainbow patterned paper I used on the card base.

Hello! I'm glad to be back again! :)

I can't begin to express my gratitude to my wonderful friends and colleagues for all the support they have surrounded my family with during this time. And, I also want to extend my heart-felt thanks so all of you for the well wishes and caring thoughts you have expressed while I was away, helping my parents. My mom is recovering well from her surgery, and moving forward with the next phase of her treatment.

Please consider yourselves virtually wrapped up in a mondo group squishy hug... :)

In keeping with all the gratitude I'm feeling, today's video is a thank-you card!

Most of my life, I've lived near the sea (I'm also the daughter of a retired USCG Chief!) so it's not surprising that I have a love of nautical themes...

I wanted to make a nautical thank-you card, using the Dockside stamp set and Nautical Notions dies by WPlus 9  with a feminine touch and I think this color scheme and the sequins/bling are a great way to pull it off!

One cool discovery in the making of this design: Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink can be used on the Lifestyle Crafts Washi Sheets! I just heat set it gently after stamping and was so tickled to see it showed up quite nicely on my little "S.O.S." flag! *fist pump*

The Shabby Burlap Canvas by Julia Stainton

I'm a big fan of mini canvases.

I'm a big fan of burlap too.

That being said I just couldn't resist checking out the new Tim Holtz Burlap Panels.

I was pretty excited to get them and love how my first creative journey went with them. I made this sweet little mini canvas with one of the canvases. There's four in the package and that has me looking forward to creating more!

Here's what the burlap panel looks straight from the package. The texture is amazing! This panel measure 3"x4" in size.

To highlight all that gorgeous texture, I started off by brushing on some gesso. I like to put just a little on a brush and lighting brush it across to that you just get the tops of the fibers to make them stand out. Gesso dries really quickly so you can be onto the next step before you know it!

I like to use the Studio Multi-Mediums as an adhesive with mixed media projects. I've torn out a bird from some printed tissue. I like torn edges in mixed media as straight cut edges seem a bit hard and interrupt the flow of the design. This particular tissue by 7 Gypsies has recently sold out of Ellen's store but you'll find a link below to the Tim Holtz Melange tissue which is really very similar in style and works great as a substitute.

Another of Tim Holtz's new products that I just had to order and try is the new Fabric Packs. I love fabric and these swatches are going to get lots of use from me. They are perfect for paper crafting but I'm pretty sure my sewing machine will be coming out soon too! They come in 6x6", 8x8" and 12x12" sizes. I've used the 6x6" Eclectic Elements Pack.

Here's a piece of one of the prints cut out of the fabric using pinking shears.

Fabric is wonderful added to mixed media projects and it can be applied easily with the Studio Multi-Medium. I like to brush lots of the back of the fabric and in this case I've brushed it over the top as well once the fabric was adhered to the burlap panel.

Here's where I started experimenting a little. Rummaging through my stash looking for paint, I found some Ice Stickles and thought a little glitter and glam might be just the ticket on this project. I simply squirted a blob of it onto my work surface and spread it onto the burlap with my finger. Really truly, it wasn't that messy as fingers wipe clean easily and I was able to press it into the texture of the burlap exactly where I wanted it.

I found this a really great way to get the glitter into the project and not have it flying all around the room.

Next step in my canvas, I added in a little color using some Classic Teal Studio Paint. You'll see light touches of it here and there in the finished project. I still had a little on my brush when I painted the chipboard frame with white gesso and I love the hint of color it gives.

I like it so much that I just had to brush a little on the petals of these sweet paper flowers.

 I think these sweet mirrored stars are my absolute favorite product that Tim Holtz released at the recent tradeshow. I had to add one of them to the design as well.

The frame was adhered to the burlap panel and then all the pretty embellishments were adhered to finish off the design.

Lastly, here's a little closeup of all the fabulous texture on the edge of the burlap panel. When creating a canvas, don't forget the edges. Adding interest to them will finish off your design. With Christmas around the corner, this project has me thinking. Some little burlap panels would make a lovely and creative gift. What do you think?

Hello, Monday 10.07.2013 with Heather Campbell

Hello everyone! Heather Campbell here and I’m so happy to be joining you in the CLASSroom today!

I can’t believe its October already!  Halloween decorations are quickly going up and I find my mind beginning to shift to Thanksgiving recipes and Christmas fun.  2013 is quickly coming to a close but I think it’s important to pause and take in something that October also represents.  October is also breast cancer awareness month, something that has touched so many of us.  The latest statistics are that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.  So, today, my thoughts and prayers are with Julie and her mother, my Aunt Starr and my Aunt Larmon, and to everyone else who is fighting for their lives or to find a cure. 

With all of that said, I wanted to create a card that would be perfect to send to anyone battling breast cancer or perhaps just needing a little care and support .

 

To create my pink ribbon on this card, I used the new Avery Elle Build a Banner stamp set.  What’s awesome about this banner stamp set and makes it different from the other banner sets is that it allows you to stamp a banner in two different colors of inks!    

I’m always searching for the perfect shades of pink ink.  Most lighter pink inks always seem a bit off to me but I love how Hero Arts Soft Pink and Bubblegum worked together here!

I am really enjoying the chalkboard trend right now and I felt like it was the perfect complement to the soft pink banner.  Hero Arts black layering paper and Hero Arts Unicorn ink are great for this!  Since I wanted to keep the banner the focus of the card, I really liked the softness of the Unicorn ink.  If you wanted it a little crisper, white embossing powder works perfectly for that!

Fall Shaker Card by Sharon Harnist

Hello and happy World Card Making Day!  I can't think of a better subject than Friends to focus on for the day so in keeping our friend, Julie HRR and her family in our thoughts and prayers, this card is dedicated to her:

This is a fun Fall shaker card and couldn't be easier to create, with a few simple products!

I recently discovered a FABULOUS new Essentials by Ellen in the store -- Woodgrain Embossed 110 lb. Cardstock . . . can you say WOW?!!  I started off my 5-inch background by using Mother Nature's mask -- a dried leaf I found in my yard!  I simply held it in place on the woodgrain cardstock while airbrushing Copic Sketch Marker YR23 around the edges, moving the leaf around the background and repeating.  See the beautiful woodgrain of the cardstock starting to emerge?

Next, I airbrushed Copic E23 over the top of the YR23, creating a ghosted, dimensionally colored background:

Ultimately, I decided the color of the background blended together a little too much with the patterned paper I was using, and decided the ghosted background wouldn't be seen as much as I would have liked on this project, so I opted with airbrushing the entire background with just the YR23 marker.

To give the background more depth and accent the woodgrain, I lightly sponged Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink over the top of the entire background. To hold this 5-inch heavy (110 lb) woodgrain paper onto my 5-1/2-inch card base made from from Hero Arts Mixed Earth Layering Paper, I used Copic's high-tack 1/2-inch Double-Sided Tissue Tape.

Next, I used this wonderful Friend quote from My Favorite Things' Clear Stamp Set Chalkboard Greetings, and inked it with these Memento Markers (Bamboo Leaves, Cantaloupe, Morocco, Peanut Brittle & Potter's Clay): 

The sentiment was stamped onto Neenah Classic Cream cardstock. 

Now for the fun shaker part!  I die cut these pretty Memory Box Jasper Leaves wreaths from Memory Box Crimson, Mango and Jack-O-Lantern Notecards and Persimmon Cardstock:

Then I snipped off some of the leaves from each of the wreaths, filling this great little gadget -- Impression Obsession's Large Square Shake It Pouches with the leaves, using them for my shaker material:

The Shake It Pouches are little containers made from a clear plastic material, about 1/8-inch deep, with a 1/4-inch self-adhesive lip around on the edges for you ... shaker cards couldn't be simpler now! The large square I used measures 2-1/2 inches and they also come in a smaller, 1-5/8-inch square and two sizes of round!

Once your shaker material is in the "well", be sure to check the "fullness" of your shaker BEFORE adhering in place -- it will probably take less shaker material than you think. Before filling the shaker pouch, I placed it over my stamped image and marked the placement with a pencil. Then I cut out my sentiment. After checking your shaker material and making any adjustments, just peel off the adhesive liner and place your stamped background over the top, sealing in the shaker material.

Impression Obsession also makes coordinating die frames, both square and round, for these shakers (can you see me bouncing in my chair?!!)  Each die set will make frames for both sizes of shaker pouches!  I used the Square Shaker Frame and die cut an orange pattern from the My Mind's Eye Happy Haunting 6x6 Paper Pad.

To finish my card, I placed the die cut shaker frame up on Copic Foam Tape, over one of the left over Jasper Leaves wreaths.

Sending Our Love - World Card Making Card Drive

We would like to thank you for the loving thoughts you have shared with Julie over the past several weeks as she helps her parents after her mom's recent surgery to help rid her body of the breast cancer that has taken hold. Many of you have asked if there is anything you can do to help, so we have come up with a plan. Today is World Card Making Day and we would like to invite you to help us "send our love" to Julie's family!

Today is the perfect day to share your love, encouragement, and strength with Alice (Julie's Mom), David (Julie's Dad) and Julie! Think of the joy they will receive from all over the world when they open the special cards you create!

Simply send your cards to us here at Ellen Hutson LLC and we will send them on to Julie and her parents. (We have already received the thumbs up from them.)

Details:

• Please only send cards  - they can be anything cheery, encouraging and supportive.
• Please write a kind message in the card and sign your name and where you are from.
• Please write the name of who the card is for on the outside of the envelope - Alice, David or Julie.
• Cards should be sent to:

• Please send your cards to us by October 18. This should allow enough time for those overseas to share their love with Julie's family as well. Each time we get a box filled with cards we will send them off to Julie's family  - this way the joy will be spread out over the month!
