Fall Altered Frame by Sharon Harnist

The calendar says it's officially Fall ... at least in some parts of the country (still not here in Texas, though)!  So I thought to help me get into a Fall frame of mind, I would make a Fall photo frame!  Here's what I came up with:

To start this project, I decoupaged (using Royal Coat Decoupage) some neutral papers from Authentique's 6x6 Glowing patterned paper onto a 12-inch MDF photo frame from a local craft store (I liked the nice, large 5" x 7" opening).  I always put a final coat of decoupage glue over the top of the patterned paper, to make it more resilient.  

I finished the edges of the frame with Studio Sable Brown Acrylic Paint.

To make the cascading leaves, I die cut leaves out of several fabulous colors of 100% wool felt Ellen carries: Butter, Dark Sage, Rhubarb and Terra Cotta, using Tim Holtz Tattered Leaves Bigz Die.

The Bigz dies can easily be used in the Cuttlebug, by using a sandwich of B plates:

This felt is wonderfully thick, but this die cuts it like butter!

Next, I cut a small dead branch from a tree and attached the die cut felt leaves to the branch, using Fabri-Tac glue.  Since I covered the front side of the branch up with all of the leaves, here's a photo of the backside of the branch, so you can see how the leaves are attached:

The branch was secured to the frame using one of Tim Holtz's Hinge Clips, so I could have the option of maybe switching out this branch with a different seasonal decoration in the future.  Plus, the clip holds things nice and securely!  

The clip was attached to the frame using Glossy Accents -- it's also a great quick-drying permanent glue!  To accent the clip, I tied some black and brown Baker's Twine to the top.

To accent the top right corner of the frame, more leaves were die cut from Nutmeg felt, machine stitched, and accented with a large brown button tied with brown twine.

For the FALL tiles at the bottom, I used Inchie Arts Neutral Inchie Squares (Dark Cream) and embossed them with Tim Holtz's Bricked Texture Fades Embossing Folder.  

(The Inchie on the left above has not been texturized yet).  Then I painted the Inchies with Copper Adirondack Acrylic Metallic Paint Dabber and topped them with Maya Road Mini Alphabet Chipboard Letters that were painted with metallic Gold Paint Dabber.  

To distress and age the brighter metallic paints, I used Walnut (or any dark brown) Stain Distress Ink to darken them.  Here's a comparison of what the tiles and letters looked like before adding the Distress Ink (items on the right in the photo below) vs. the distressed versions on the left:

To finish this frame, I chose a few cute patterned papers from My Mind's Eye Mischievous 6x6 pad and made a photo mat, ready for a new Fall photo with a couple of mischievous little girls I know (namely my 9 and 11 year olds)!

Easy Distress Halloween Design by Julie Ebersole

I'll admit it--I very rarely "distress" anything--I love the look, it's just not a technique that automatically pops into my head.

BUT . . . (you knew that was comin', right?!) I adore kraft paper, and when I saw this color coated kraft paper, I had to play with it a little!

It has a little linen like texture, and when you sand through the color, the kraft core is revealed!  TOTALLY WICKED!!!

So then a Halloween design sprang to mind, and one thing led to another . . . *chuckle*

I needed a moon.  Not just any moon.  A BIG moon!  So, I grabbed a larger EK Success circle punch and punched a circle from masking paper.  You could use Eclipse Tape, too.  These are great for larger images and when you need ALL the edges securely tacked down while you are working.

Sponging right over the top with dye ink was quick & easy . . .

Tip:  When sponging ink, you can achieve a smoother blended look--almost airbrushed in appearance--by hitting the paper with a circular motion, as opposed to "pouncing".

When I removed the mask, I had a nice "orb" to serve as a back-drop to my focal image.

This really makes the silhouette of the crow & fence "pop"!

After cutting the image down to size, I mounted a decorative edge punched from black card stock and then I used a scoring board and the single Piercing Bug to pierce a straight line.  I then connected the holes with a fine point black marker to create "faux stitching".  I have a sewing machine. I actually bought it for the express intention of sewing on paper. I have yet to thread it . . . (hangs head in shame)

Snagged a black button and bow-tied it with some ivory twine (both from my stash) for just a little adornment and voilá!

Isn't this fun?!

I really like how it turned out! And, it was ridiculously easy! Isn't that an awesome effect?!

Color-Bleed Grid Technique by Julia Stainton

I have a fun background technique to share with you today. It's one of those "hmmm...what if I..." things that have been floating around in my mind for a while. I hope you enjoy it! It's a simple one that you don't need a lot of product for...just some Copic markers and Copic Blending Solution. I'm pretty tickled with the color-bleed look. I hope you give it a try!

Let's get started...

First of all you need to create a grid to color in. I've made my grid 3"x3" but you can choose whatever size and how many squares you wish. Use pencil and a ruler and draw it in lightly.

Next, color in your squares with different Copic Marker colors. Make sure you get a nice even covereage and use lots of ink. Erase your pencil grid when done.

Here's what the reverse side may look like. You want lots of saturation of color going right through the paper.

For this project I've used the above Copic Markers. I've used colors that are close to each other on the color spectrum so that when the color bleeds, it won't get muddy.

Now here's the fun part! With the image facing up again, drop tiny drips of Copic Blending Solution onto the grid to create "watermarks".

I've used the bottom end of a paint brush to add in the smaller dots. The Copic Blending Solution dries very quickly. A feature I love. I can be a tad impatient. Make sure the layer is completely dry before stamping on it.

And here's the finished design. Some simple stamping, a sentiment and tiny rhinestones finish it off. I find that when using a pretty technique, it's always best to keep the rest of the design simple. You don't want to overwork the design or take away from your beautiful background.

Colorblocked Custom Canvas by Sharon Harnist

I'm still on a canvas kick (loving it!), so I decided to try something different and came up with this Fall color blocked custom canvas/wall hanging:

It's pretty simple to create one in whatever color combo you'd like, to match your home decor or the season ... here's how:

I started with a piece of Ellen's Craft-a-Board and cut it into a 6-inch square and then rounded the corners, using Crop-a-Dile's Corner Chomper.  Alternately, you could use a shaped piece of chipboard, such as this pretty Melissa Frances 7" x 9" Label Backdrop.  Next, I took Ranger's Sticky Back Natural Canvas ATCs and color washed them with Ranger's Adirondack Color Wash in Sailboat Blue and Wild Plum:

You'll want to be sure to use this product away from anything you don't want colored, as it could wreck havoc with your carpet or furniture!  I used an old shipping box to contain the spray, but Ellen has this nifty Color Catcher that works great with color sprays:

After letting the canvas pieces dry, I lightly sanded each piece, to remove a little of the color and let the natural canvas texture show through (the left piece of canvas below has not been sanded yet, while the right piece has):  

Then I just peeled off the sticky-back liner paper and started placing the pieces of colored canvas in a random color-blocked pattern onto my piece of Craft-a-Board.  Using Tim Holtz Non-Stick Micro Serrated Scissors, trim off any excess canvas hanging over the edges of the Craft-a-Board.

Next, I stamped a random pattern of flowers onto the canvas, using Hero Arts Layered Flowers, with black and white pigment inks. I also sanded the edges of the Craft-a-Board/canvas, to fray it a bit ... I like how it made the canvas look a little like blue jeans!

To finish my piece, I also colored some white Sticky Back Canvas with Lettuce and Butterscotch Adirondack Color Wash and die cut it with Tim Holtz's Tattered Florals die (I left the backing on these pieces, as well as the sentiment tag, to give them stability). I used Copic E35 marker to lightly color the edges of the Butterscotch flowers and define the petals, then I layered the flowers together with a large brass brad. 

The Hero Arts sentiment was stamped onto another piece of the Natural Sticky Back Canvas ATC and hand cut into a tag shape.  You could also add a favorite photo to this piece, and it becomes a wonderful scrap page or scrappy wall art!

I hope you'll try making your own canvas piece -- get creative and choose some different die shapes and seasonal colors!

Clean & Simple Card: Just saying hi, by Julie Ebersole

This card design seemed apropos for today! I'm so jazzed to be here and part of Ellen's Education & Inspiration Team.

I'm not sure 'bout you, but I never seem to get enough of flower stamps--love LOVE 'em, and in all types of art styles.  This MONDO one by Hero Arts is one of my many favorites--such a great contemporary look, and it looks great simply stamped or colored in.  Makes for a fantastic focal image by nature of its size.

In this instance, I decided to white emboss it, and simply trace around it with a subtle touch of blue Copic that matched the hues of the patterned paper I wanted to use. It's a great way to accentuate an image like this, without having to color it all in (it is kinda big, but in an awesome kinda way. *grin*)

I love that so many manufacturers are now producing smaller, 6x6" versions of their gorgeous patterned papers because the scale/size is so perfect for card making! The Marjolaine collection has some super-cute florals, as well as great masculine patterns in hues of dusky blues, chartreuse, and charcoal.  And, they look wonderful with kraft card stock!

Sometimes you can stamp right over the top of patterned paper, and sometimes the pattern and colors are too strong for a sentiment to really show up well.  To make sure this greeting didn't get "lost" within the pattern of the paper I chose, I white embossed it onto a strip of vellum card stock about 1/4" narrower than the patterned paper first and then adhered with some Xyron adhesive (the little "X" shaped one).  Be Creative sheet adhesive also works extremely well, in lieu of Xyron, for a completely "invisible" vellum adhesive. The vellum diffused the pattern beneath it just enough to allow the sentiment to remain easily legible.

It hit me how fun it would be to layer a clear button over one of the designs from the patterned papers for an accent, so I glued it down with some Glossy Accents, and after it was dry, I trimmed it out, and pierced through the button holes so I could add some twine (I can rarely, if ever, leave m' buttons nekked, I'm afraid) and slap it down with a Glue Dot.

To finish it off, I rounded the upper right corner and decided to add white gel pen borders.  You could easily duplicate this design in 10 minutes, and if you prepped enough supplies for mass production, you'd probably be able to create quite a few in just an hour's time!  Gotta love that!

Making Buttons from Ranger Shrink Plastic By Becky Olsen

It is hard knowing how to start and end this post, I am very excited about the information I am sharing, but with all of that excitement comes a little melancholy. This will be my last post as one of the CLASSroom designers, a calling that has been much beloved by me and has given me many challenges and opportunities to share my great love for the delightful hobby of crafting. I have appreciated every comment that has ever been left on my posts, and have been inspired by the other designers in the CLASSroom as well. I am not going too far, I will continue to maintain my blog, and hope that some of you will continue to visit me there as I share whatever my latest creations will be. I feel very fortunate to have worked with Ellen and her amazing team for the last couple of years, and am immensely grateful for the friendships that have come from this adventure.

With all of that being said, I have a tuturial that has been rolling around in my head for a while, and I can't wait for you to try it!

Shrink plastic is one of those magic crafts that I played with as a kid that never lost the magic, key chains, bracelet and necklace charms, window decorations and such were all projects that I had tackled and loved making.

Now that we have Ranger to provide us with all kinds of creative materials, we can take Shrink Plastic to completely new places, including but not limited to buttons.

This sweet card used Ranger Shrink Plastic, Memory Box Whimsy Circle die cut,Prima Romantique patterned paper in 8" x 8", Perfect Pearls Mists in Forever Blue and Biscotti, 1/2" White ribbon, Color Wash in Sailboat Blue, Maya Road Paper Posies, Jet Black Archival ink, and Cosmo Cricket Tiny Type in black.

Here is how to begin, start by cutting a piece of the Shrink Plastic to a managable size for the die cut, mine is 3 1/2" wide by 5".

Sand one side in a cross hatch manner. That just means go from the top left corner to the bottom right and then the top right to the bottom left.

Run through your die cut system and remove the excess.

As you can see I used regular circle shapes as well and stamped on those to add extra interest, color and dimension. Don't forget to punch holes in the centers so you can tie or stitch them onto your projects.

Heat your oven according to the instructions on the packaging. Our oven was already to use after dinner had been made so I put the pieces on a heat resistant surface and set the timer for 5 minutes and then checked them every 1 minute after that until they had finished the shrinking process.

To achieve a complimentary color scheme I used the Color Wash by placing the button into a baggy and spritzing with the color wash and rubbed it around until it had a nice coverage, it was then set aside to dry while I used the same treatment for the ribbon.

With the ribbon I did add a tiny bit of water so it would create a little bit of uneveness in the ribbon finish as it dried. Remove the ribbon and if you wish to accelerate the drying process you can use your Heat It tool.

Spritz your papers, tie your bow through the button and put the card together as desired.

I enjoyed this creative process so much I made an extra card, it was with all of the CLASSroom visitors in mind, because without each of you, we wouldn't have this wonderful opportunity to share what we love.

This card has many of the same components, using the Romantique paper and Cosmo Cricket letters, but the Color Wash is Meadow, and there is a Glassine envelope as well as some delicious 1/4" silk ribbon.

Believe Canvas Layout by Julia Stainton

Have you ever created a project on something besides paper?

How about canvas?

This gorgeous canvas Mistable sheet was in my stash and just begging to be used. It's a fabulous surface for so many techniques. I've used a few today such as misting, stamping and embossing so why not join me for the tutorial? It's fun and do you know what I love most about it? Every time it turns out just a little different. I love the journey to the end result.

Today's layout is for my daughter. She's off to school this fall and I really miss her. Scrapbooking is a great way to relive those memories and hold your loved ones close.

This is what the canvas sheet looks like to start out with. It's already gorgeous plain but I thought I'd add a little color.

First of all I started off with embossing some designs on the canvas. Simply stamp in Versamark Ink and then emboss with clear embossing powder. If you do this on paper, you will form a resist. Because fabric is a little more porous, it usually doesn't resist too well but gives a great batik look and subtle design to the canvas.

Next up I added some misting to the design with Glimmer Mist. I love adding two or three colors together for a beautiful variation in the background. If you're in a hurry to continue, you can dry the canvas with a heat gun.

Adding some colored stamping to the canvas added a little more interest. I've used Aquamarine Archival ink by Ranger here. The Archival Inks are the best I've found for stamping on fabric.

Next step was to add some Stickles Glitter Glue to highlight the border of the design. This is the step that you won't want to rush to dry. Leave it and take a break for an hour.

My favorite part of creating is always adding in the embellishments. This flower is misted like the background to coordinate. The blue Prima Heart Trinket is simply stunning.

Canvas tags and butterflies are the perfect addition for this layout. A great way to adhere the buttons to the canvas is with Ranger Glossy Accents.

Finally, the title is made up of some very cool Wood Tiles. I've misted them as well to make them tone in with the layout.

Lockhart Pumpkin Cookies Foldover Bookmark

There are times when I wonder if I'm living under a rock - LOL! With everything going on in life I don't have any time to blog hop and so I have no idea if someone else has shared a version of this project before. Using a large, shaped die to create a "foldover" is an idea that I just thought was fun and so I had to share it with you - I hope that you enjoy it even if you have heard it before.

 

I have been LOVING the label dies from Memory Box Company and it was after creating the Halloweenie card with the Chadwick Label that this idea dawned on me. Why not create "foldovers" with my larger dies?!?

 

To create a "foldover" you simply score your cardstock and fold it. Then using a piece of tissue tape attach the cardstock, with the fold line end slightly lower then where the die would normally make the cut, to the face of your die.

 

Run it through your die cut machine and voila a very nifty "foldover." These then can turn into darling bookmarks that have fabulous shapes!

 

To hold the bookmark in place use a Basic Grey magnet - these are still the best magnets on the market for something like this.

 

Shown above are the colors of Copic markers, Prismacolor pencils and Spica Glitter pen that I used to color the Pumpkin Cookies. I <3 this image and have used it as our thank you's this month.

I also used the Copic Markers to color the 1/4" white silk ribbon with purple to add a little "pop" to the project.

As a little aside - I must tell you that Indie Bloom has papers in the collection that have a fabulous halloween feel.

 

To close I had to share the first version of my project - it is so amazing to me that sometimes when I view my completed project through the camera lens I see missing elements. That is precisely the case in today's project - do you see the difference? It's the littlest of details that can make a card special. By simply adding texture to the edges of the foldover with a pierced design the project comes to life.
