It's time for part three and my final "funny" clue. You must admit that if nothing else, these little contests can be highly amusing. Perhaps I need to get more sleep - LOL!

I have one of these beauties growing in my back yard and I must tell you that the blooms are exquisite! Here in the Northwest this flowering bush is known by it's common name and so this is part of the reason that I was a little "confused" as we began our guessing game.

The project I created for today's post is to honor my mom. My mom has a beautiful, kind spirit, and I love her dearly. One of her passions in life was her garden. She has raised the most incredible vegetable garden! I remember summers when she weighed the total amount of tomatoes picked from our garden and it was over 300 lbs. That's a lot of tomatoes :)

Not only did my mom raise vegies, but she had THE most spectacular flower garden. The last summer my mom lived in our farm house I was so lucky to be able to take some pictures of the beautiful flowers, as well as snap some pictures of the girls amongst those gorgeous blooms.

I created this little piece using one of those pictures. To add just a little dimension to the piece I colored Karen's new Petunia image. The new patio pot series is so incredible - it was so enjoyable to sit and color this image. After all the hectic, hurried days I have been experiencing it just felt so good to color for a few minutes!

Lockhart Salad Recipe Card by Sharon Harnist

 

This is one of my favorite salad recipes I thought I'd share.  I've been enjoying making my favorite recipes into keepsake cards over the past year and now that I have a pretty recipe box to store them in, you'll be seeing a few more recipes from me.  Just think of them as mini scrap pages and have fun!

Mine ususally measure 4" x 6" and I start by printing my recipe from a Word document onto Neenah cardstock.  You'll just need to set your printer for a cardstock option, and this weight of cardstock will run through your printer just fine.  The fonts I used are Susie's Hand for the title (a free font available at just about any font download site) and Batik Regular for the rest (standard Word font).

Once printed, I trimmed the recipe portion to approximately 3" x 5", rounded the corners, and stamped the Lockhart Tomato With Greens.  Since this recipe calls for no tomatos, but pears, I decided to stamp the Lockhart Single Pear, cut it out and pop it up over the tomato, creating a new type of Vegetable Couture!  The images were colored with the Copic markers listed below.

 

The recipe was adhered to patterned paper measuring 4" x 6".  Flowers and Dew Drops accent the left side.  I hope you'll try making some of your beloved family recipes into keepsakes to pass along to family and friends ... I'm sure they'll be greatly appreciated!

Pear and Greens Salad

1/2 cup oil

3 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 tsp. celery seed

1/4 tsp. salt

Dash of pepper

2 heads butter lettuce, torn into pieces

2 pears, cored and chopped

1/2 cup toasted walnuts

1/2 cup crumbled bleu cheese

 

Combine oil, vinegar, sugar, celery seed, salt, and pepper in a jar with a very tight lid. Shake well until sugar is dissolved and the dressing is blended. Set aside in the refrigerator. Combine all salad ingredients and pour dressing over, tossing to coat.  Serves 6

Now here is where this is going to get really funny!!! At least I think so - LOL! Many of you have guessed Petunia. I am guessing that you thought it was a Petunia because... when I just hovered my mouse over the picture, up popped the word Petunia. Well, guess what - it's not a Petunia. I mistakenly called it that when I edited the picture because I was so tired - LOL! So for those who have guessed Petunia, you must realize that I am trickier than that (totally by accident though - insert rolled eyes and silly grin).

It is also pretty funny because I didn't think to tell you if I was looking for the "scientific" name or the "everyday" name of this flower. So... I am going to honor both answers. The first person who guesses the "scientific" name wins one of these stamps. As well, the first person who guesses the common name will receive this stamp. Now, I am trying to do a little better here tonight, so I'm going to add that we will have two different winners. If the same person guesses both, we will default to the next person in line who happens to guess the correct name.

Gift For Mom by Kim Hughes

Here is a quick, cost effective gift for your Mom or Mother figure in your life.  How wonderful to have a photo of her child or grandchildren to remind her of how much she is loved.

 

This is a photo of my niece.  :) This project can be created easily by teens and children too.

start by licking the envelope to seal it.  You are going to make a frame from an Arturo envelope.  They are 3.5 x 5.5.  Measure a half an inch from all 4 sides.  Use a pencil as a guide if needed (but on the back side of your frame)

 

 

Extend the cut with scissors to complete the frame shape.

mat the envelope frame onto paper base. (4 x 6)

 

stamp a houndstooth pattern onto the frame with Tea Dye ink.  I chose a color that compliments my photo

 

cut the same size chipboard as your mat, in this case 4 x 6.  Cut a strip of chipboard to 1.5 x 5.5 and score an inch from the top, so that it will bend.

 

poke 2 holes in the scored chipboard piece and hold into place with 2 strong brads.  You may want to cut the chipboard stand, depending on how tall you like your frame to stand (or how much room you have on a shelf)

embellish with cut paper flowers.

 

I used a glue pen to add glitter to the flowers and leaves.  It adds a feminine touch, I think.  This idea can be used for any occasion at any time of the year.  Thank you for joining me today.

Spring Trees Z-fold Birthday Card by Debbie Olson

Today I have z-fold birthday card to share with you.I chose a tree from the CHF Spring Trees set, as well as a sentiment from Mona Lisa's Birthday Centers set. I love Kim's whimsical images, and Lisa's centers sets are incredibly useful! I stamped the tree in Memento London Fog ink and colored it with Copic markers in the following colors: BV000, BV02, G21, E55, E57, and 0.

For papers, I chose the new Basic Grey Wisteria Collection; Ellen has the 6" x 6" Wisteria pads in stock, though I used 12" papers for this post since I had them on hand already. Directions: Cut cardstock to 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and score at 2-1/8" and 4-1/4"; z-fold. Next, using the largest Long Scalloping Rectangle Nestability, trim one edge of the Memory Box Wisteria cardstock. (Slip cardstock under only one long edge of the die. I usually roll it only partially through my Wizard and then use the reverse button to back it out to keep from marring the cardstock where it lies on top of the die. Alternatively, you can use any edge punch.) Trim the wisteria cardstock panel so that it fits your front panel. (It should be about 5-3/8" x 2-1/4".)

Layer your Basic Gray Wisteria paper on top of the wisteria cardstock. For the inside panel, cut a 4-1/8"" x 5-3/8" piece of wisteria cardstock, layered with a 4" x 5-1/4" piece of the Wisteria patterned paper. Stamp inside sentiment on the top center of this panel; it will be hidden behind the focal image. After top-stitching (or piercing) the edges, layer both the front panel and the inside panel onto your card.

Color your focal image with the Copic markers listed above. Paper-piece the grass with the Wisteria patterned papers. Trim, mat, and stitch your focal image. Add rhinestones to the centers of the tree blossoms, and attach matted focal image to the card front, putting adhesive only on the left half (which is the right half when you have it backward. . . ;-D)

Finally, tie a length of silk ribbon through a button and attach the button with a mini glue dot. (I used a button that I had on hand, but Wisteria has coordinating buttons here.) The z-fold should look like the picture below when it is standing. As long as you don't write too low or too far to the right on the card, the inside sentiments should be hidden when the card is closed.

battling the pencil thieves... by Cindy Lyles

Have you ever had your writing implements...just walk off...seemingly...on their own?   Yup - that happens here - A LOT.  I'd like to share today how to conveniently decorate (or mark/identify/mine! - hee) your writing tools!!

After having six (yes, six) brand new, nicely sharpened pencils disappear from my office within three hours, I developed an idea...

Some folks like pens...I'm a pencil person.  You could use this technique on pens too...but...I even carry a small pencil sharpener in my purse.  Weird?  Obsessive?  OK maybe a little...but I really like my pencils!  Maybe you can understand, or sympathize, why I've taken to marking my pencils from my six and nine year old pencil thieves! 

OK to begin we're going to use Claudine Hellmuth's Studio Sticky-Back Canvas (either her 8.5x11 or her 12x12) and a few nice, brand-spankin' new pencils.

Claudine's quality canvas is beautifully textured on one side, and has a super sticky adhesive on the reverse, with a protective backing that you simply peel away to expose. 

I cut a piece of the sticky back canvas to the width needed - I measured the logo/writing on the pencil and used that as my guide.  For the length - You'll use roughly one inch of canvas around each pencil.  For four pencils my canvas was roughly 2-1/4" x 4".

We'll also need a couple of Mini Misters - these hold any liquid, an produce a wonderful, very fine mist. 

 

I sprayed the canvas with one mister containing Distress Peeled Paint re-inker and then added water, leaving about a 1/2" of head room so the contents can emulsify (how-to at the end of this post).

The canvas was sprayed with a second mister, shown above, containing Distress Mustard Seed re-inker and Perfect Pearl (it's a Perfect Pearl Product - mica powder with a binder - the water acts as the binder so there is no need to seal - the water seals it - yay!  A step-by-step how-to create this mister is the end of this post).  Heat set wet canvas with a heat tool or craft iron.

Claudine's canvas holds up despite relentless attacks with water...and heat from the heat tool too...and yet stays super-sticky!

 

Stamp canvas with desired image.  I'm using Ranger's Archival Ink in Jet Black, and Memory Box's Classic Flourish.

 

Lastly, if desired, take any script stamp or other fine line image, and stamp canvas using a Peeled Paint Distress pad.

Cut canvas apart into 1" (or circumference needed for each pencil) increments, then peel off backing.  These adhere neatly and cleanly to each pencil.  Thank you for visiting the CLASSroom today!

A quick word about re-inkers and misters: 

Tim Holtz's Distress products (Ellen Hutson carries a full inventory of every color), including the re-inkers, will not alter in hue when mixed with water.  Green stays green.  Red stays red.  And browns stay true and will not turn pink.  This is not the case with all dye-based re-inkers, so play and experiment!

 

To create the Peeled Paint mister I used above, use one full dropperful of Distress re-inker, then fill mister with water leaving 1/2" headroom for the contents to emulsify when shaken.

 

To create a the Mustard Seed & Perfect Pearl mister, place one dropperful of Distress reinker, followed by desired amount of Perfect Pearl powder (I used Perfect Pearl here, and a popsicle stick to insert).  The more powder you use the more shimmery the spray will be.  You'll want the re-inker in the mister first to 'grab' the Perfect Pearl powder.  If you opt to place the powder in first, it will become 'locked' in the bottom of the mister by the liquid and be very troublesome, difficult, time-consuming and frustrating to emulsify while shaking. 

 Fill mister with water leaving 1/2" headroom for the contents to emulsify when shaken.  You'll need to shake any mister you create each time you use it, to ensure the products are mixed thoroughly.

The Perfect Pearls powder creates an incredible and brilliant shimmer on the surface!  With a few Distress re-inkers (there are 24!) and a few Perfect Pearls powders and some Mini Misters, you can create a vast multitude of colored sprays quickly and inexpensively.

I like to label my misters with the ingredients I used so I can quickly and easily make more.  You can label them further by spraying a piece of white cardstock with the mix then drying (heat set with a heat tool or craft iron), then punching cardstock with a 1/2" circle punch and adhering the circle punch to the mister cap - this makes identifying your misters super fast and easy, especially when using the handy Mister Organizer.

Collage Elements by Kim Hughes

The possibilities are endless with the Collage Elements stamp set.  Combine a couple of images or create with several on one project.  Use one color or combine many colors to create unique pieces of art every time.

Use the ink of your choice.  I used Ranger Adirondack dye inks.  Since I chose Arturo paper, the stamped images look like a painting.  Arturo paper is similar to watercolor paper and it absorbs ink well.  This card is intended to look like a piece of art hanging on a wall, so I added dimensional squares behind.  You could add flair to this card by adding bling to the butterfly and flowers.  You can glitter some petals, frey the paper edges and wrap a pretty bow around it.  I chose to keep it clean and simple.

Start by stamping with a bold color.

 

add in a lighter color.

 

 

add in 2 more complimentary colors to cover the white space and cut down to create a mini canvas.

 

Here are some mini samples.  Of course you can use different colors, combinations and different ink types to change the look.

 

Create custom patterned paper by combining multiple images and colors.  If you stamp on smooth paper, the images will be crisper.

Martha Stewart Cosmo Garden Favor Box Bouquet by Sharon Harnist

  

These darling pink Martha Stewart Cosmo Garden favor boxes sparked an idea -- to use them in a pretty bouquet that can be used for birthdays, Mother's Day, May Day, baby or bridal showers!  And since these sweet boxes just fold together at the top to close them, you can reuse them over and over again . . . a "green" project, in honor of Earth Day this week!  It's very simple to make, so let's get started.

I started with a Cornet Refill for a vase to hold my bouquet -- these are sturdy cardboard cones, about 7 inches tall and 3 inches wide at the base.  I stamped my own patterned paper to cover it, by using CHF's Fiery Floral Scrapblock and Tim Holtz Shabby Shutters Distress ink:

 

I stamped onto an aqua print in the Scrapblocks Layers Paper Pack.  Then I covered the Cornet with the paper, using an aggressive liquid glue.

 

TIP: These Cornet "cones" don't come to complete point -- they have a hollow tip.  I've discovered a 1" round paper punch punches the perfect size to cover that smaller end.  Once covered, I added a trim at the top, using Spellbinders 12" Classic Lace Large Border to cut more of the Scrapblock Layers paper, a pink pattern this time:

 

Then I started on the Cosmo favor boxes.  I stamped them with Tattered Rose Distress ink and CHF's Climbing Floral Backgrounder stamp:

 

Next, I bent a piece of doubled 24-gauge beading wire into a swirled circle at one end:

 

Then I inserted the wire into the box bottom and taped it into place.  This gave me a "floral stem" to work with and to use to insert the Cosmo box into the bouquet:

 

I wrapped the wire stem with green floral tape.  Next, fill your floral box with birthday favors for guests, perhaps birthday money for a teenage girl, jewelry for Mom on Mother's Day, mints for a bridal shower, or small baby items for an expectant Mother. 

Closing up these boxes can be a bit tricky, so I thought I would show you how.  First, start by folding down the larger portion of each "flower petal".  The smaller scored "V" portion (next to my thumb, on the left) gets folded down onto the previously folded petal:

 

Keep working your way around the box (here, I'm working my way to the left, or clockwise).  The last few petals may be a bit tight of a fit, but they will interlock!  You may need to push the petals down into the center of the box, to get them to interlock. 

  

You can leave the petals pushed down, for a different look:

Or gently lift them back up to get them to look like the ones in my bouquet.

I decided my bouquet could use another type of flower in it, so I played around with the Spellbinders Dahlia flower die and came up with this three-dimensional daffodil or Narcissus-type flower:

To make them, I used cream and yellow patterns from the same Scrapblocks Layers paper pack.  You'll need to die cut two of the second-to-largest size of flower in this die set (the cream paper below) and one of the second-to-smallest sized flower in this set (yellow in the photo below):

 

Next, only EMBOSS the smaller die into the centers of the larger flowers:

 

This will give you a guide for cutting the flower.  Cut one petal totally out.  Then cut the remaining petals only up to the embossed flower line:

 

Then bend the petals on either side of the cut out one, so they overlap . . .

 

Secure one petal on top of the other one, with adhesive, and bend back the petals:

 

You'll get a coned, three-dimensional shape!  Layer another white flower underneath the first one and then poke your wire up through the center of the flower and twist it into a circular shape, same as with the Cosmo favor box above:

Secure with tape and/or a glue dot and bend the petals of the smaller yellow flower, that will become your flower center:

 

Cover the wire with the flower center, and you'll have this:

And a view from the side/back, so you can just how dimensional this flower is:

Finish with some greenery.  You can make a hanger for this bouquet by attaching ribbon or cord either to the back or sides of the Cornet, or display it as I have in a small, simple vase or in a larger vase filled with glass stones, or maybe rice for a bridal shower.

Shoes, shoes, shoes... a new trendy shoe template

It was an honor last year when I was approached by Creating Keepsakes to design another shoe template for their upcoming Spring/Mother's Day issue. I know that many of you have enjoyed the witches shoe and cowboy boot templates that I have created and so I once again wanted to share one of my specialty designs with you.

It is also important for you to note that this template is the property of Ellen Hutson LLC and the rights for it have not been signed away, so before downloading this template I must first request that all of you who own Cricut machines, or other electronic machines, that you not share this file with others in forums and via your own website. You are welcome to link others to this post so that they too can enjoy creating this shoe by using this design, but this template is the property of Ellen Hutson LLC. Double click on the link above to locate the template for this shoe. You may need to resize this document to maximize the use of your 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of cardstock. I found that I lost the very tips of the shoe base when I made my projects, but just used a pencil to finish the complete template. My finished shoe size is approximately 6 1/2"l x 4"h x 1 3/4"w. You are also welcome to make the shoe just as is, but it will be ever so slightly smaller than the ones viewed in this photo.

 

Many of you know that my background is Interior Design, but I'm guessing that you didn't know I can sew and cook - LOL! It was my senior year of college that I was told that I could not be certified to teach (yes, I also was a certified teacher - just one of the many hats I have worn already in life) with an Interior Design major and so I had to switch to Home Economics. Needless to say my senior year was VERY busy, but I did learn how to sew, make complex templates and entertain. Martha Stewart isn't the only one who can sew, entertain and craft - LOL! I am most certainly NOT saying I am another Martha Stewart, but I just think it is funny. Yes, my rather absurd sense of humor is coming out again today. It is sunny here in Seattle and it truly makes my day when that happens :)

After I agreed to do this template for Creating Keepsakes I then did my research as to what type of shoe is popular today. Since breaking my foot I haven't been able to wear the "cute shoes" that are available and it is funny how soon one loses touch with the current fashions. So I found this information to start my design process.

Following are the supplies and directions for creating this shoe, along with a few photos that I took throughout the creative process. I hope these photos will help you more easily understand how I construct these shoes so that it will make it easier for you to complete.

Instructions:

Print PDF download - download shoe template here

Enlarge if desired.

Attach template to cardstock using temporary adhesive. I would like to suggest the Glue Glider Pro, Repositionable Cartridge

Score along dotted score lines. TIP: Use a Scor-it for the straight lines and a dry embossing stylus for the curved lines. Place on a soft foam pad when scoring curved lines.

Clip along back "seam" of shoe, being certain not to clip past score line.

Fold each piece along score lines, use a teflon bone folder to make permanent creases.

Apply adhesive as indicated. TIP: Use an adhesive that holds well, such as 1/8" width red-liner tape.

Attach the two shoe body pieces along the back seam

Use the teflon bone folder to firmly press the backs of the shoes together along the seam. Allow to sit for a few minutes before proceeding to give the adhesive a chance to take hold.

Attach the top portion of the seam to one side of the back of the shoe,

Attach the shoe heel base,

Attach the toe to the shoe sole,

Attach the shoe body to the shoe sole front,

Attach the shoe body to the shoe sole front,

Attach the middle of sole to the shoe body,

 

Attach the upper sole to the shoe body.

Embellishing the shoes:

There are many ways to vary and enhance your shoes. Just a few examples are:

• Add texture to your cardstock using Cuttlebug folders,
• Add texture to your cardstock using a stamped design together with Fun Flock, glitter or embossing powder,
• Add embellishments to the heels, toes and shoe backs using pearls, flowers and ribbon, 
• Use a combination of patterned papers with solids, or various patterns together.

Artsy Blooms and Distress Inks by Debbie Olson

I'm really enjoying the CHF Shady Tree Line; when I saw the Memory Box Fernbrae papers, I thought of the Artsy Blooms image. First I colored the image with the Copic markers shown below, colors chosen from the floral paper below.

Here is the image after I colored it. It's a bit bright, compared to the papers that I am using it with.

To mute the colors a bit, and to tie in the plain background with the texture on the printed papers, I chose a Canvas Backgrounder and some Distress inks (Tea Dye and Scattered Straw). See how the over-stamped background starts to tie the image in with the papers now?

It needed a bit more distressing, so I added some sponging on the edges. (I used Vintage Photo and Old Paper in the step shown below.)

Finally, having a focal image that was compatible with my background papers, I was ready to put my card together.  I kept the layout pretty simple, using three papers, a Martha Stewart Scalloping Embossing punch, some mini brads, narrow silk ribbon, and a couple of buttons from my stash.

Sparkly Bird Bonanza Make 'N Take

As I mentioned in our newsletter I had yet another important annoucement to share regarding the new Memory Box release, Sparkly Bird Bonanza. As you all have probably guessed by this time - I live my life moment by moment, day to day. It is literally a mad scramble sometimes - LOL! So while on vacation I open up my email to learn that Dave has another new release - Sparkly Bird Bonanza. Participating stores just hit the purchase now button and all the supplies get sent out. Well, what I didn't realize was that papers, pearls and jewels were also included in this purchase and they are not the "typical" Memory Box Notecards and Envelopes that we carry. These Aqua and Truffle notecards are not duplex cardstock, but colored all the way through, as most other cardstocks and in addition there were these delightful scalloped Postcard sized inserts as well. I am guessing that all these "goodies" are what stores use for Make 'N Takes or they carry these supplies in their inventory.

Being I don't know how to do an on-line Make 'N Take I determined that I needed to put these to good use and so I decided that I will be giving all these goodies to those who would like to purchase the entire Sparkley Bird Collection Ü

 

You didn't think that I would force you to come up with all your own ideas for a Make n Take though - did you?!? Besides I haven't had the opportunity to stamp in THREE weeks!!! I was itching to ink some rubber and play with these pretties!!!

 

I colored Artsy Owl with Copic Markers - Y000, YG00, YG06, BG11, BG72 and Y38. Adding in a few Prismacolor color pencil highlights for texture. Then blinging the chest in these beautiful lagoon colored jewels (yes, all the bling for these three cards will be included in your packet ladies Ü) As I stated in the newsletter this new Memory Box bling is FABULOUS - the colors are delicious and the fact that there are 165 bitty jewels or 126 pearls on each sheet is even more fabulous!

I then stamped the Truffle notecard with Parsley Sprig, using VersaMark Dazzle Frost. If I would have used a little more thorough planning I would have stamped the Parsley Sprig so that my owl could actually sit on the "branch", but I was flying by the seat of my pants once again - LOL! Then popping the pearl effect even more, by swishing on a little extra pearl quality using Perfect Pearls, Perfect Pearl (say that 10 times in a row without cracking up) and my owl was sitting in a forest.

 

Now what to do with those scalloped notecards? Well cut and apply of course Ü Add a springy sentiment a little distressing with Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink and one pretty is done!

 

Next came this gorgeous Crested Bird. I absolutely love the delicate, lines of the branches included in this composition! Once again I used the same Copic colors adding in a YR31 for the beak, wings and leaves.

To create the circular focal point I quickly pierced the circle from this Ornare template on to a piece of typing paper. This allowed me to then see my bird beneath so that I could pierce the holes and not poke through the bird or foliage, but instead poke "around" it.

 

Hopefully this little visual helps you "see" this process better.

Once again some pretty bling (this time jewels and pearls - so that you can visualize the size of these better), a portion of the scalloped postcard and another card is ready for you to make.

For the last card I decided to use the Leafy Tree image. I just find the overlap of the leaves so very interesting and thought it would be fun to experiment with color on these leaves. Unfortunately this photo sort of popped the color white on me, but you can see that I really had fun with my colors.

 

Once again I used the exact same colors for the leaves - YG00, YG03, YG06, BG11 and BG72. The trunk was colored using E31, but because of the VERY tiny branches I also used a VERY sharp Prismacolor color pencil, Burnt Ochre and Dark Brown to help add depth. Lagoon jewels and Cherry Pearls added some depth to the image and helped it coordinate with my little "collection".

 

Once again I cut up a Truffle scalloped postcard and used it to layer the tree on to the front of an Aqua Notecard.

Spring Decorations by Kim Hughes

Spring is on it's way! Yay!!   How about making some fun critters to adorn your home or work place.   I think they would make a sweet little gift as well.

 

Supplies:

Basic Grey Buttons, Bittersweet

Kim Hughes Paper Pack, Mocha Chica

Punch, 5/8" Circle

Red Liner Tape, 1/4"

Cardstock, Neenah Classic Solar White

Beading Wire, 28 Ga, Silver ( I used craft wire, but I am sure this will work great as well)

other:

embroidery Floss: DMC

black card stock

 

First, start by drawing a bird shape onto heavy white card stock with a pencil.

 

 

Once you are happy with your image, cut it out to make a pattern.  Trace it onto the back side of your desired paper and cut it out.  Cut 2 bird bodies. (they need to be facing 2 different ways, not the same way)  You will need 2 eyes and 2 beaks. Save your pattern for future use. 

 

punch a white and black circle for the eyes, and a triangle for the beak.  Cut 2 beaks, cut one in half so that you can add it on top if the base one.  This just adds more interest (it's not necessary)

 

to form the bird legs and feet, start at one end of an 18 inch piece of sturdy wire and bend 3 toes that are about 1 inch long.

 

cross over the other wire and bend them together.  Repeat on the other end of the wire

 

then bend in the center of the wire.  You may need to adjust the feet so that it will stand on it's own.

 

Use a VERY sturdy adhesive.  Apply red tape on the back of the paper bird and pull off backing.  Place wire securely on top.

 

add more red tape on top to secure the legs.  Adhere beaks and eyes and add second bird to cover the back.

 

I created a butterfly shape, you can use a die cutting system if you are not comfortable doing this.  Draw half the butterfly and fold the paper.  Cut the paper while folded for even wings.  String thread through button holes to create the antennas (attach with a Zot).  Bend a curl in the wire, bend a loop around your finger in the middle and attach the butterfly, like I did with the bird.

*Tip make sure your paper is light, otherwise the image could be top heavy and have a hard time standing up*

Poppies and Copics and Vellum, Oh My! by Debbie Olson

Today I have a floral card to share with you. I began with a CHF Shady Tree Studios Perfect Poppies stamp, an Aged Sheet Music Scrapblock, some Webster's Pages Designer Vellum Cards and Hello Beautiful Journaling Cards, Rich Cocoa Memento ink, and a vague idea. . .

I loved the circle in the Webster's pages vellum but needed to think of a way to let the flower show through. I used a circle Nestability to cut both a window and a mask--the window for the flower to show through the vellum, and the mask to protect the background cardstock for the flower while I stamped music in the rest of the background.

Next I placed the mask over the musical background and stamped my poppies in Memento Rich Cocoa ink.

After stamping the poppies, I used a Copic Airbrush system, along with Copic markers Y23 and B 23 to airbrush the background for the poppies. I didn't bother masking the flowers because I knew that I was keeping the blue toward the top of the window, where I planned to raise the larger poppy bloom on foam tape anyway. The lower poppy is colored directly on the background, but the pale yellow didn't harm it.

After airbrushing my background, I was ready to color the poppies. I used the Copic markers shown below. (The B23 on the end was used only in the Airbrush. The Y23 was used in the airbrush as well as the poppy center. And as I sit here typing, it occurs to me that I have never in my life seen a yellow poppy center. . .   That center should have been black.  Perhaps I could plead artistic license?)

Here are the parts for my card, coloring finished and the large poppy layered with foam tape for added dimension.

I used a few strategically placed mini glue dots to attach the vellum layer to the background. The printed layer works surprisingly well to conceal glue dots. The little "beauty" tag is cut from a Webster's Pages Journaling card and pinned on with a Tim Holtz mini pin. Pink pearls conceal my more apt-to-be-spotted glue dots, and a wide silk ribbon from my stash finishes the card.

Spring Arrangement & Soldered Easter Eggs by Sharon Harnist

Here's the Spring arrangement I came up with to put in the altered vase I showed you earlier this week:

I started with a decorative branch and two sprigs of tall silk flowers from the craft store, and stuck them in floral foam inside the vase.  Alternately, you could gather some small limbs from your yard and either leave them natural or spray paint to coordinate with your theme.

I decided the arrangement needed some signs of Spring . . . birds & butterflies!  So I cut two large butterflies from Basic Grey's Porcelain paper with Spellbinders largest Nested Butterfly die and adhered them back-to-back, so it would be double-sided and pretty from either side, too.  It was adhered with a mini glue dot to one of the top small branches.

I die cut three medium butterflies from another pattern in the Basic Grey Porcelain collection (using the same Nested Butterfly set) and adhered two of them on top of each other, only in the center of the butterfly's body, to give the butterfly more dimension. 

The other die-cut butterfly was adhered to the back of the base butterfly so it would be nicely finished, too.  A piece of looped heavy thread was sandwiched in between the layers, to serve as a hanger.

The bird was die cut with Spellbinders largest Nested Bird die from Basic Grey Porcelain paper.  He is also backed with more of the same decorative paper, to make him two-sided (also with thread sandwiched between the paper layers, to serve as a hanger).

To get the mirror image you need for the back side of the bird, die cut from the back (white) side of your paper (if you are using a single-sided decorative paper), as opposed to die cutting from the front/patterned side of the paper.

 

Birdie's wings were made with the smallest bird from the Nested Bird die set -- I just trimmed off the beak!  Then to make it look more like a dimensional wing, I used the Scor-It Mini Board to score a flap along the top of the bird and adhered just the flap to the bird's body:

Now, time for some soldered Easter eggs for our Spring tree!  I decided to make two different eggs -- one for my young daughters and one for me!  The girls' egg was stamped with this cute chick and flowers from Kim Hughes' Sweet Spring stamp set, using Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  I masked off the chick before overstamping the flowers, and then colored him with these Copic markers:

He is backed with some pretty Spring floral paper from the Memory Box Poppyfinch collection, sandwiched between 1.50" x 2" Oval Glass pieces.

I used the Wavy Edge Copper Foil Tape (which is straight on one edge) and Simply Swank's Lead-Free Solder to solder the pieces together.  The Heart Solder Scrolls were used at the top, to form a hanger for the White Silk ribbon.

For my egg, I used the angel from The Rummage Bin's Storybook stamp set.  The angel was stamped with Memento Tuxedo Black ink onto Memory Box Poppyfinch paper.  If you can't make out the words on the angel's wings, they read "rejoice & believe" and she is holding "love" -- very appropriate for Easter, I think.

The angel egg is backed with another pattern from the Poppyfinch paper, and soldered the same way as the chick egg:

You could always take these "eggs" off the tree and wear them as pendants, too!

I know this project is a little late for most of you to be able to replicate for this Easter holiday weekend, but I hope you'll keep it in mind for next year ... or better yet, start on it now so you'll already have it for next year!  Alternately, you could use this idea for most any holiday or occasion ... the items you put in your arrangement will make it unique to you and the occasion you are celebrating.  Many thanks to Ms. Ellen for suggesting this wonderful idea for me to carry out!

From Shabby to Shabby Chic by Kim Hughes

Traditionally "shabby" means old...but it's so easy to make something old look new and then it becomes "shabby chic".

 

This is my SHABBY card.  I realize that I could have "dirtied or grunged" it up a lot more, but I feel more comfortable with a cleaner look...even when it comes to the shabby style.

 

and this card became SHABBY CHIC by adding some glitz and fresh paint.

Supplies for both cards:

* Art Flowers, White & Cream

* Distress Ink Pad, Tea Dye

* Glitter, Multi Ultra Fine Crystal

* Graphic 45 Times Nouveau, Hey You!,  Graphic 45 Botanicabella, Secret Garden,   Graphic 45 Times Nouveau, Wallflower

* Mona Lisa Moments, Wedding Centers

* Studio Acrylic Paint, Blank Canvas

* Basic Grey Brads, Granola

other:

* twine

* various Graphic 45 papers and die cut sheet

* decorative scissors

 

I cut down my papers to plan each card layer before I added some "distress' to them.

 

I chose my favorite Ranger Distress ink for this card.

 

and I chose Claudine Hellmuth's paint for this one.

 

Make sure you trim off any excess paper when using punched out die cuts.  I inked  every edge of the one card and painted every edge of the other.  I then adhered all scrap papers to their card bases.  I machine sewed around some of the edges to add texture and interest.

Bending some paper edges lightly also adds to the aged feel of these cards.

 

When you go from shabby to shabby chic, you are simply making something old, new again.  So, fresh, cute touches do the trick.   I decided to add glitter to my brads.  Squeeze some liquid glue to the brad tops...I spread the glue out with my finger and dipped the brad head into the glitter bottle.   Give them plenty of time to dry.

 

some other finishing touches that I added are:

shabby card: simple brad with twine bow and a simple, elegant sentiment

shabby chic: glittered brads, wrapped twine that is tied in a bow and 2 flower accents which also add to the new "trendy" feel and look.

*Tip feel free to change out any vintage looking papers with the ones that I used.  So many colors work well with this look*

*Tip 2 other products that add to the shabby chic look are pearls and lace...some touches to shabby projects are metal and paper tearing*

Spring Vase by Sharon Harnist

Today I'll start a two-part tutorial on a Spring project and follow up in a few days with part two.  I've had this metal vase for a few years now -- I picked it up at WalMart on clearance, knowing the shape would be easy to work with altering.  It measures 8" tall and is 7" square at the top.

 

Now, this vase might be great as it is for some decors but I wanted a lighter, springier feel for my project.  Upon closer inspection of this metal vase, I discovered it was covered with the printed rooster paper.  I peeled off as much of the paper as I could -- but that one piece on the right side just wouldn't budge!

 

Then I sanded off as much of the rest of the paper as I could and gave the vase a coat of Gesso.  Gesso is white and acts as a paint primer for your project, filling in low spots and helping to make your project smoother:

  

Next, I custom mixed a base coat of tan paint from Claudine Hellmuth's Sable Brown and Blank Canvas Studio Paints. 

 

The shade I ended up with is probably close to her Traditional Tan color, if you wanted to avoid having to custom mix colors.  But that's the beauty of these paints -- you CAN custom mix colors very easily, without the fear of muddied colors, so I worked with what I had on hand.

 

Next, I used Tim Holtz's Flourish Mask and placed it exactly where I wanted the pattern.  It is green in the photo below because this was the second side of the vase that I'd painted (and thus, painted over the mask with green paint!).  Normally the mask is clear and has a low tack to it, so it will temporarily stick on your project while you paint over it.

 

Then I painted a coat of Claudine's Landscape Green paint over the mask and tan base coat and ended up with this:

 

You'll love these paints -- they cover very nicely in just one coat!  The silver you see is from a silver paint pen that I used to outline the mask shape, once the paint was dry.  I also used it to dab in the crevices of the vase's feet, to highlight them:

 

I also used the silver pen to finish off the top rim of the vase:

With Cherries on Top by Debbie Olson

I adore cherries! The cherries stamp from the Shady Tree Studio Fruit Basket set and the Graphic 45 Times Nouveau Bees Knees paper coordinate beautifully. Today I have a cheery-cherry vintage card to share with you. I haven't added a sentiment inside yet, but I was thinking along the lines of "Cherry-o" or "Cherry up!" as an encouragement card.

I started by stamping the cherry image on Natural White cardstock in Tuxedo Black Memento ink and coloring it with the Copic markers shown below. (Only the R24 is unavailable in the store.)

Next, I die cut and embossed the focal image with the Spellbinders Labels Three die, one of my new favorites, and sponged Vintage Photo distress ink lightly on its edges. I cut a mat for the image from Dill cardstock and sanded its edges before attaching the colored image to the mat.

For the background, I cut a piece of the cherry paper and then tried a different twist for the edging on the red piece: I had tried the Polka Dot Frames Die a couple of days ago and noticed that the negative shape--the leftover piece after I had my frame out--was interesting enough to be a decorative edge. So I cut two of those negative shapes, one from the red dotted paper (Times Nouveau Lollapalooza, out of stock at the moment) and one from the Dill cardstock.

I finished with moss green twill tape, buttons from my stash, and string. Hint: when you tie those little bows on buttons, it helps to place a small dollop of Ranger Matte Accents in the center of the bow. This will keep it from coming untied, and since it isn't reflective, it won't be noticeable. Thank you for visiting the CLASSroom today!

I am headed out for a much needed spring break with my family this next week. We are looking forwards to spending time together in a warmer environment. God has seen fit to play an April Fool's joke on us a number of times here in Seattle by gracing us with snow - LOL! So we are thrilled to be escaping to a hopefully warmer place.

Matching paint to paper by Kim Hughes

I am so excited an honored to be here.  Thanks so much for joining me.

I thought it might be fun to show you how to customize embellishments to match your favorite papers.  By adding paint to naked chipboard letter, I was able to create an accent that looks like it was sold along with the patterned paper.

 

Supplies:

• Paper Distresser, Tim Holtz

•  Twill, White

•  Basic Grey 6x6 Patterned Paper Pad, Porcelain,  Basic Grey Buttons, Bittersweet

•  COPIC Sketch Marker YG63, Pea Green

•  Art Flowers, White & Cream

•  Buck Naked Alpha-Buttons

• Claudine Hellmuth paints: Studio Acrylic Paint, Altered Orange, Studio Acrylic Paint, Blank Canvas, Studio Acrylic Paint, Dash of Red

•  A Cardstock, Neenah Classic Solar White

 

Of course red and white make pink, but what you won't know until you combine them, is what shade exactly.  Use a painter's tray, a shallow plastic container or sturdy paper plate.  Always start with a smaller amount of the color and have plenty of white handy when creating such soft color.

 

start by painting the raw chipboard white.  This will help you achieve 'truer" color.  Painting on brown will make all colors much darker

change the color of the twill with a Copic Marker.  Be sure to color both sides

 

Once I combined the red with pink, I found that the color took on a purple hue and needed to be toned down.  I saw a peach tone in the flower and decided to add a touch or orange.

 

keep mixing until you have the right color.  Keep in mind that sometimes color darkens as the paint dries.

 

apply paint to accent and allow to dry.  Claudine's paints have a special smooth look to them.

 

Now you can create a monogram card. String the green twill through the holes to make them appear to be the flower leaves.  Distress the paper edges to add texture.  And keep it simple so that the gorgeous paper isn't hidden.

*Tip Use the extra paint if possible.   Paint the entire surface of a white card front to use later on.  You can use the extra paint to create an accompanying project to coordinate with the card.  Or paint extra letters for future monogram projects.

It's No Joke!!! along with April Stamp of the Month

I have some absolutely wonderful news to share with you - we have a delightful and very talented young lady joining us here in the CLASSroom. I believe that you will be as excited about this news as we are! BUT I thought if I posted it this morning you might think it is just an April Fool's joke. It really isn't!!! So instead of just telling you I'm going to have you play a little guessing game as to who will be joining us - following are seven FUN FACTS to aid you in your guesses:

• I couldn't believe this one - LOL - she lived on a sailboat for a period of time,

Now on to this month's SOM creation.

Sweet peas... I LOVE flowers and have grown these beauties in my garden for many years when I was able to be an avid gardener. I would sit my little ones in the flowers and take their pictures. I am going to have to hunt up some of those photos and scrap them. They bring back such fond memories.

I crave spring! So once again I have selected a beautiful floral for this month's image.

 

This image can appear tricky to color when you first look at it, but when broken down it is easy to achieve a beautiful look. The combination of this image with the Basic Grey Porcelain collection provided such a soft, elegant look.

 

The key to coloring this image is to begin with a light color. Use that color to "locate" your buds and foliage. I used Copic markers R11, RV11 and YG00 to determine the placement of my colors. It was important for me to have Karen's colored image open help me determine the flower petals from the foliage.  

 

To complete coloring the image I also used the aid of Google and looked up an image of Sweet Peas on the internet. I loved the soft watery look of this image and so I used my Copic T series markers (T3 and T1) along with the colorless blender to create the watery shadow.

To add to the "vintage" effect of this image I used Crackle Accents on the vase. Accents of Spica pink glitter pen were added to the floral petals.

 

This month we have changed up the packaging a little. Many of you have been truly enjoying the mixed packs of Memory Box notecards and envelopes, so we have paired up the Porcelain paper and buttons with a special combination of notecards - Sweet Corn, Peach Fuzz, Peony, Peapod and Vanilla Bean! We hope that this wonderful combination leads to some beautiful creations in your studio!
