We have had some products in the warehouse that are a bit of a mystery to me. Wet Media Transparencies are most definitely one of those items and now that I have had the opportunity to begin to play with them I want to experiment even further! I have created a couple of different projects now utilizing the transparencies and today I am going to share the first of my experiments.
Peel Off stickers are another one those products. The "glitter ladies" were the first to show me these stickers and I have to admit I really didn't get the fascination with them. You know, I'm a stampy stamper and so couldn't imagine what I would do with these. Well... one thing led to another and yes, I fell off the wagon and gave them a try. I hate to admit it but I'm thinking these can be quite addictive as well - LOL!
So today I am going to combine these two products and share some of my discoveries - I hope you enjoy this little journey into the unknown.
The first of my creations shows a combination of the beautiful Koi Peel Off stickers together with the wet media transparency.
It is my understanding that these tranparencies work well with watercolor products. Being Distress Inks can be used as a watercolor medium I went ahead and stamped the ink pad directly on my non-stick craft sheet. I wanted to create an ombre look and so I utilized three different colors.
I laid the wet media transparency directly over the ink and moved it gently back and forth mixing the edges ever so slightly and covering the entire transparency. I then set this aside to dry.
I then spritzed the remaining ink on the non-stick craft sheet with my mister and using a slightly larger transparency I ran it through the ink/water puddle and also set it aside to dry. As you can see you can achieve vibrant colors or more subdued color with this technique.
One of the things I noticed was that the more inky surface did not want to dry completely. I would like to experiment further with different varieties of ink to see if they will dry more readily than Distress Ink, but unfortunately with all the goings on in life right now I just didn't get the time to try this out yet.
I then prepared to use the Peel Off Stickers. I found it easiest to use my tweezers to lift the stickers from their surface.
Place the stickers on the side of the transparency opposite the ink. The VERY cool thing about these transparencies is that you can create a monoprint of the ink by simply applying pressure to the surface. The ink will then transfer to the paper surface beneath! I do believe that some experimentation with my Vagabond and Big Shot may be in order in the near future ;-D
While at CHA I watched as Els flooded her Peel Offs with color. Finally another reason to use the Sakura Glaze pens I have had for years. Yes, years! It was at least four years ago that I taught several classes sharing the fun of stamping on regular transparencies and it was Souffle and Glaze pens that we used to color in the images.
This is the addictive part! Flooding each of the little fields with color and then adding a second color to add depth was way too much fun and so relaxing.
To utilize two colors I tried a couple of different techniques. In this one I first laid down my lightest color and then came back in and floated a little of a darker accent color in to the light color. It is important to add that second color immediately before the ink begins to dry. Once the ink begins to dry it is best not to touch the surface and disturb the smooth finish.
As you can see you can get a lovely variance in color! My first experiment was on the lighter or more watered down transparency.
This second experiment took place using the Distress Ink version. I placed it atop a piece of fresh Neenah cardstock as I could tell that the ink was not yet completely dry. As I colored in the scales on the fish I noticed the "magic" happen. I wish I had thought to take a picture of this portion without the transparency covering it because the monoprint of the fish is VERY cool! If you look carefully at the photo close to the bottom of this post you will find two distinct fish prints. These were achieved by firmly coloring in the Peel Offs and then using this print beneath the finished piece of artwork.
The second method I utilized to color in the Peel Offs was to use each color independently, just butting the color up against on another. This keeps each of the colors more true to the original color of the glaze pen.
This shows a better view of the monoprint I was talking about above.
Learning to use new to me products is so much fun! I can hardly wait for the opportunity to experiment further with the Wet Media Transparencies and now try the Peel Off Stickers with glitter and Copics. I'm a happy girl when I get to play with new things and discover what can be done with these unusual surfaces. I hope that you enjoy this little journey into the unknown corners of our warehouse.
