Hopping in with some Easter Treats in Sizzix Popcorn Boxes

I just wanted to "hop" in and wish you all a very Happy Easter! This year the Easter bunny decided to create a couple of little treat boxes using the Sizzix Popcorn Treat containers. These were super fun to create and my thought is that I can easily change out Easter Anya and use a different image if the girls would like to use these in their rooms to store "stuff."

To make these sturdy I first adhered Happily Lost decorative paper to Craft-a-Board using Be Creative Tape. I then cut these out using my Big Shot Pro. I have to admit that I'm LOVING these large scoreboard dies to create these wonderful sized containers.

The labels were created using the smaller 6x6 coordinating papers affixed to Craft-a-Board and cut with the Stylized Labels Die. It was super easy to add the girl's names using the letters included in the kit!

Easter Anya needed to be brunette for Maddi. My blonde decided that she really wanted to be a brunette - I must admit that she is a stunning brunette with her beautiful green eyes. So this required me learning a new Copic hair color - yeah!

For skin I love the following combination: E0000, E000, E11 and R11 (for rosy cheeks). 

The brunette hair was created using: E31, E34, E37, and E27. 

Next it was time to create for my sweet little blonde. 

 

For blonde hair I like to use: Y21, YR30, Y26, and Y28.

Using Antique Linen Distress Stain on our Everyday Ribbon allowed me to create the perfect coordinating color. Along with creating these little treasures the Easter Bunny spent some much needed time cleaning the yard and so she is REALLY exhausted and can't think of what else to tell you about these projects - LOL! Sometimes being less wordy and just sharing pictures is better anyways - right?!?

These little popcorn boxes will make wonderful office supply holders as well as adorable birthday treat boxes! Oh the possibilities! Thank you again for visiting today - wishing you and your family a wonderful Easter day, filled with many blessings!

Thank you to all who shared your questions with me - I hope to try and begin answering them and sharing more information regarding the Craft-a-Board as time allows. It is already up for sale on our store - just follow this link and it will take you right to our site. We have located it in a couple of different sections of the store - Alterable Items and Die Domain: Accessories. There are 12 sheets per package, with each sheet measuring approximately 9 1/2" x 13 1/2". You will most definitely be able to cut it into smaller pieces using a rotary cutter such as a Carl Cutter or a guillotine style paper cutter. I even use my small Tonic guillotine style cutter to make smaller cuts. I didn't have one of my old Fiskars at work, but I will take it with me tomorrow to see if it will cut this material as well.

The above picture shows Craft-a-Board next to medium weight chipboard. As you can see it is considerably thinner. The neat thing about Craft-a-Board is that it is heavy enough to act similar to a "book board" or chipboard. One layer of Craft-a-Board makes for a lightweight book, but if you want your book covers to be thicker you can adhere two pieces together after cutting.

When looking at the picture above you will note the "cutting line" of the dies. It is imperative in selecting materials to be used with these dies for the material to be no thicker than the height of the "blade or cut line". This is the main reason for my quest - I wanted to find a material that the Spellbinder dies would work with. I wanted the added value of being able to use my dies to create books and other projects that typically use chipboard.

The use with embossing was one that I just happened upon after determining that it would cut shapes for books and mini albums. The embossing became this amazing added bonus!

I can tell you that Craft-a-Board is nothing like Grungeboard. I do not know what Grungeboard is made of, but it leaves an almost glycerine like feeling on your fingers after you run your fingers over it. Grungeboard is very "bendy" and will not crack when wrapped around items. From what I can remember Grungeboard is also not stable enough to be used as a "Book Board". Now I need to order some Grungeboard to really make a comparison - LOL! I will most definitely make a comparison when I am able to pick up some Grungeboard. Now you have me wondering if the Spellbinder Dies will cut through Grungeboard!!! Does anyone have an answer to that question?

UPDATE: Cutting Craft-a-Board with the Cuttlebug

Guess what - having a B plate that is not already cracked makes a WORLD of difference Ü! As I said in my first experiment my B plate was on it's last legs and well... you saw the disaster. I picked up a new B plate and tried it all over again. Easy peasy this go round! Please be aware that I do want to test this further, but just haven't had the time yet. So watch for more information to come on this category.

The first time through I used the following sandwich to cut my label die (note this is not a highly detailed die):

• A plate
• B plate
• Craft-a-Board
• Spellbinders Die - blade face down
• B plate

To emboss the Craft-a-Board I used the following sandwich:

• A plate
• B plate
• Spellbinders Die - blade face up with Craft-a-Board inside die
• Tan Embossing Mat
• Extra piece of Craft-a-Board cut to the same size as the Tan Embossing Mat
• B plate

This time there was not even a cracking sound. I think the difference was that I had the sandwich correct this time. The last time I wasn't getting a nice embossed image and so I ended up using (2) Tan Embossing Mats and that is when my plates splintered. I will test this some more and make certain that this information is accurate, but with all the different things I was trying and the limited amount of time I had I have not had an opportunity to try this with a variety of dies yet. So please know that I will do more testing when I have the opportunity.

I then applied Crackle Distress paint to my cut out and look how cool it is! Now I just need to stamp on it and make it into a project. But who has the time - LOL!

Being that I was also wondering about the Cuttlebug embossing folders, and this being a question that many of you had, I decided that would be my next test. The piece on the left was embossed using the Cuttlebug and the piece on the right was embossed using the Wizard. TOTALLY COOL!!! I am going to warn you that the pressure exerted when using my Wizard was incredible and so I was very careful to be ready to catch this project as it exited my machine. The difference in detail is not as obvious in this picture as it is in real life, but I can tell you that you will more than likely be thrilled with the result no matter which machine you happen to choose to use with the Cuttlebug folders. This texture is wicked cool!!! AND you can use it as a book cover!

I then proceeded to do a couple more tests with these boards. Using chalks I quickly colored the image and then added crackle paint around the edges to define them. Next I punched it with my Bind-It-All. Using the new Bind-It-All corner rounder I softened the look of the corners (these will be available in our store hopefully by September - they are on order and just awaiting shipment from the manufacturer).

As you can see in the above picture and the post that I shared last week I used the Bind-It-All on "My Christmas Wish List" book as well. This book was created using the Craft-a-Board. The interior is filled with Natural White cardstock pages and the cover with Craft-a-Board. As you can see I first added color to the board using my Copic Airbrush system. I then stamped it using Distress Ink and the Vintage Ledger ScrapBlock. The next layer was added by selectively covering it with Basic Grey's paper. Many of you asked if it can be glued and the answer is a resounding yes! I used Perfect Paper Adhesive to adhere the paper to this project and ribbon glue to adhere the twill.

Cuttlebug dies work like a charm, or should I say tag - LOL!

Unfortunately Sizzlet's just don't cut it - ha, ha! Sorry I just couldn't resist the stupid pun - it is most definitely a sign that I should not be working right now - LOL!

Sizzix dies work great! So I am only guessing here, but my guess is that Big Shot dies will work awesome as well. I will test it though and communicate that in a future post to be certain.

The question was asked about flexibility. I have found that once the Craft-a-Board is inked it becomes much more pliable. This particular piece I used my Adirondack Red Pepper Dye ink pad to completely cover both sides with color. I had a couple of different tests in mind when doing this with the first being flexibility.

After releasing it you can see that it still had some of the curve still in it. I have found that I can flatten it back out again, but left to it's own accord this is how it reverted to shape.

I then did the tear test. As you can see you can get a very interesting look with this technique. I added a brad and though that this could make a cute napkin holder, or ???

The last test I am going to share tonight is the scoring test. I only own a Scor-It because of the true score that I can achieve with this tool. When using cardstock I have never had any cracking on the backs of my cards and I have crisp, precise folds - so needless to say I'm a huge Scor-It fan. What I found is that the Scor-It did a fairly decent job of scoring this material, but it is just a hair too thick to achieve optimum results. As you can see there is slight cracking at the top and bottom of this fold and with time I am wondering if it might totally fall apart. I guess I'll just have to try that when I have nothing else to do. Perhaps when I'm on our roadtrip to Canada in a couple of weeks, I'll take this little guy along and just bend and unbend to my hearts content Ü

Craft-a-Board Blog Candy

Well, after some serious brainstorming, Craft-a-Board is the name we have selected for our new product. Why Craft-a-Board? It all comes back to what it is that we use it for - crafting Ü There are so many different ways to alter the surface of this material and "craft" with this board. Today I hope to share some of those with you. These are all VERY basic techniques and I know that you will each come up with your own ways of using Craft-a-Board - I am so excited to see how you use this product.

First, you can cut it - you can even use many of the Spellbinders detailed dies with this product. To test it thoroughly I used some of my extremely high detail dies in addition to the Nestabilties. Below are some of the results I would like to share with you.

I wanted to share this picture with you being I am going to state that not all highly detailed dies will work 100% effectively with this product. But as you will see in the following pictures I did end up with a beautiful end result using this die. Sometimes you just need to send it through more than once. After running it through my Wizard with the tan embossing mat you can see that I did get the beautiful cut and embossed detail you see below.

As you can see in this view the detail is outstanding after being passed through the Wizard

Secondly, you can emboss Craft-a-Board and achieve beautiful results. This is an up close view of the fronts of these pieces along with the die. The arrow is to point out the areas that I didn't realize I needed to remove the little bits from my first project - therefore it did not cut all the way through when I sent it through with my second test. Be certain to clean all little pieces of paper out of your detailed dies before using them to cut through the Craft-a-Board.

This next series of pictures is to share what the product looks like when you cut only and then the change that is added with embossing.

This is the new Nested Bird (to be released in September - sorry I just couldn't help myself - I love this little tweetie) shown after the Craft-a-Board was run through the Wizard using the cutting sandwich. There is some detail showing along the embossed edge on the front side right from the start.

This shows the back view. If you are looking to have a surface that is completely smooth then this product is not going to achieve those results. The back view is pretty smooth, but I can see just a hint of the impression from the embossing edge.

Once you send the product back through the Wizard with the tan embossing mats you will see a beautifully defined edge. Very crisp and clean.

As you can see I have been playing with a whole myriad of products to see what will work and what won't. I am thrilled to tell you that at this point I am absolutely tickled and thrilled with the results and the opportunity to bring out all sorts of supplies that I have had hidden in my drawers for some time now.

As you can see the color of this material is not quite white. I have taken these photos on a white sheet of paper so that you can see for yourself the difference in the color. The material itself is fairly even in color, but being it is a recycled product there is some variation in the color on the surface of the material. I am not too concerned about this being I will be doing all sorts of things to the Craft-a-Board to alter it and give it a finished look, but I wanted you to know that there may be some variation in the color.

I was absolutely thrilled with the results when I used both my Copic markers and airbrush system. I began by stamping this Lockhart image using my Memento Tuxedo Black. I waited for a few minutes for the ink to set and then picked up my Copic markers. Being that the surface of this material is somewhat porous I determined not to color the image by soaking it with ink, but rather to use a light hand in applying my color. I did add several layers of color to see how well it would hold up to additional ink. I am extremely pleased with the result - I did not have a lot of feathering occur outside my lines. Remember I did use a light hand in applying the color though. I topped it off with some Spica glitter and then airbrushed it. This was a quick, simple project to complete - now all I need to do is complete an actual project with it Ü

Thisleaf was just begging to be embossed with the "old-fashioned" embossing powder. OK, old-fashioned may not be the right choice of words, but it is a technique that I haven't used much lately. My tarnished gold embossing powder was calling my name though and so I applied some Versamark Ink and then applied the embossing powder, heat set it and voila - this leaf just pops!!! I can see an amazing piece of artwork collaged using this piece.

 

My curiosity was completely satisfied when I applied Memento ink directly to the surface of this little bird. When the ink dried it left an almost suede-like look as it's final result. I love how easy it was to put the ink pad directly to this material and give it a solid color!

Memento ink was also applied in the same manner to these two flowers. The larger flower I wanted to see how well it would pierce, the smaller flower I inked up one of my new ScrapBlocks using my Ranger Snow Cap pigment pad and applied the ink. I am absolutely tickled with the results of these different applications. I can totally see turning this little flower die into an adorable album with little pictures in the center of each flower - perhaps those pictures will be a series of baby pictures, or my daughters can each put together a little mini-album using their friends pictures. So many projects - so little time!!!

There are so many more things to test yet... acrylic paints, crackle paints, chalks, Prismacolor color pencils, Glossy Accents, ... Please - I need more time in my day! As I am able to achieve these tests I will most definitely share them with you.

Does the Craft-a-Board work with the Nestabilities dies in the Cuttlebug, Big Shot, Big Kick, etc.?

Unfortunately the jury is still out on the Cuttlebug - LOL! As you can see my already splintered plate just couldn't hold up to the pressure and broke into lots of pretty little pieces. Yes, it did cut and emboss this highly detailed die, but not without the major league negative side effect of a broken plate. I should have known better and purchased a new plate before trying though and so I'm not certain at this point how well it will work. So as I said - the jury is still out!

The Big Shot faired well. The embossed detail is not quite as dramatic, but you can't really expect it to be being the Wizard exerts so much more pressure than the Big Shot does. I was happy with these results and there were no ill side effects on the Big Shot plates. So I do believe that those with either a Big Shot or Big Kick will be able to achieve similar results.

Frying Pan to the Fire - and a big announcement Ü

I can't remember the exact wording of this old saying, but I completely understand the gist of it - LOL! Can life get any busier? I arrived home from CHA so blessed to have had a group of talented women keeping the business running smoothly on this end. They are incredible and I am blessed to be surrounded by such a fabulous group. I don't think that I have mentioned this before, but I just have to share this little tidbit because I am such a proud Mom. Maddi, my 14-year old daughter is working part-time with me this summer! My girl is amazing - I love her so much and I am so proud of her (you can't tell, can you? Ü). She is right there chipping in, helping get things more organized - she is a whiz with the computer and is putting together all sorts of things to help us get even more on top of things. I share directions with her and off she goes to get it done. She even cleans - LOL! Love that girl!

One of the challenges of being a small business owner is the summer vacation schedule. As soon as I arrived back it was Beth's turn to head out for some leisure time. I hope that she is having a grand time back in Connecticut! She truly deserves this down time. With her down time though comes my up time -so that's why I'm in the fire - LOL! Beth takes wonderful care of our customers and the girl can chat! I know that our customers adore her - thank you Beth for all you do!! Doing everything I do and now adding the bookkeeping, customer service and ... well let's just say I haven't had a moment to post to my blog and for that I apologize. You are all so incredibly loyal and faithful and I keep trying to get myself back here to share some eye candy, and thoughts about creating and CHA...

CHA - what a fabulous experience and yes, EXPERIENCE is definitely a word of choice. May I just say that to be surrounded by the sheer volumes of talent and creativity fills ones creative soul to the depths, but moreso to be able to hug and hang out with like minds is truly an experience to be remembered always. It's all about the people! To hang with all of you who come here to visit with me on my blog, would be right there alongside the CHA experience - someday we have got to figure that out!

I don't even know where to begin. Foremost I would like to thank those who were so incredibly gracious, supportive and generous in there well wishes and compliments regarding our newest baby - the Pierceabilities. It was with the greatest of laughter that I found out that Rainy lives no less than 5 miles from me!!! Am I living under a rock or what? We are going to create together sometime soon Miss Susan!

I am going to share a little known fact about myself. My reason for heading to CHA is so much different than many at this point in my life. For me it is all about the education I can receive and the ability to meet face-to-face with those I work with. I must admit that I did not have the opportunity to walk the entire floor. So I am right here alongside everyone else blog stalking today to see what it is that I may have missed when it comes to the beautiful new products. I go with a list and an agenda and I do feel that I was able to accomplish most of what was on that list, but I missed out on SO much eye candy!

There is a story behind the missing eye candy that I must share for its humor - because walking the floor was in my plans, but my body had other things in mind - LOL! I know that many of you can appreciate stories like this because I do believe they can happen to any one of us. I needed to head back to my room to get some data off of my computer. Unfortunately all attempts at connecting my internet failed and I ended up with a huge headache. So I decided to take some Advil and just lay down for 20 minutes. Yah right - I even thought to set the alarm, I'm not that blonde Ü Well guess what I am that blonde - I set my alarm for 20 minutes later only it was a.m. not p.m. I kid you not that I awoke with such a start when my phone rang and then realized that it was several hours later. I had a handprint impressed on my cheek! Oh vey - it has become most obvious that one should not burn the candle at both ends because it leads to missing out on some of the best opportunities in life!

OK - so back to why I attend CHA - education! I would like to share this with you because I do believe that there are many of you out in cyberworld reading my blog who are designers. You are seeking the how to's and what should I do's about becoming a part of this creative industry. CHA provides the best seminars to educate you as to how to do that. I can not recommend enough that if this is what you would like to do with your life then don't go to CHA and just walk the floor. Become your own member, yes - there is a designer category. Go to CHA and take classes! They are so very affordable and you will walk out those doors with a level of knowledge that will truly help you understand the importance of believing in yourself and turning this into a real "job".

My favorite seminar or business class that I attended this time round brought me right back to the days of my youth. Many of you may not realize that in my younger days I was a professional interior designer. My background is in education, design, color, trends... yada, yada, yada. The seminar that I found absolutely and totally over the top interesting was one that focused on fabric and color trends. This seminar was presented by a vibrant young lady who works for a company that is headed up in Paris. They have many employee's in 27 countries around the world. They compile their data and put together incredible, (over-the-top incredible) books that share upcoming color trends, pattern trends and overall models of where the future of this industry is headed. I tried to place my mind in the zone as I flipped through those books being I couldn't pull my camera out and start clicking pictures - LOL! I learned about where this industry is headed for the years 2009 and 2010. I think I can tell you what colors Stampin' Up! will be adding to their new In Color lines but I'd best not let the cat out of the bag, so to speak, just in case I'm wrong - LOL! Well that's not the only reason - more on that to come.

I will add that we have some very interesting dynamics on the horizon. It all begins with new discoveries - in this case it is a creature that is found in the deep dark depths of the ocean. I can't remember the name of "the creature" but I will tell you that the colors are strikingly beautiful in a very unusual manner. Stunning, stunning, stunning - I tell you.

You may wonder why it is that I am not bullet pointing all this trend information. It is out of respect - respect to those who have worked so hard to compile this information as a means to providing a livelihood to their families. Many companies are struggling and I want no part of making their jobs more difficult. It is also out of respect to those who have taken the time to educate themselves. It is through this education that we can then learn to share and teach others, but it must be done in a manner that does not overstep professional courtesies. 

One thing I have learned over these last couple of years is that one must respect others. Respect, kindness and loyalty are words you don't hear often enough from what I can see. The privilege that comes with being a part of developing products and concepts in the crafting world can not be taken lightly. There are many families that have elected to make this their career - they have mouths to feed and bills to pay and it is so important to me that I not take advantage of my situation and make their task more difficult or impossible. Believe me when I tell you that I would like to shout all sorts of information from the rooftops, but at this time it is not my privilege to share that information.

I am blessed to be a part of the crafting industry, I am blessed to have each of you in my life - I will truly do my best to share and educate to the depths of my soul over this next six months as I await the arrival of the next industry show. So yes, the mad scramble continues as we develop new products that we hope will touch people's lives and allow them the opportunity to express themselves creatively. Products and tools that will provide an opportunity to bring more happiness into life and then share that happines with others.

Now for some eye candy and a big announcement! I think that many of you have figured out that I don't like to sit back and just wait for life to happen. Versatility and value are such an important factor to me when it comes to using my crafting tools. So once again I set out to find a product that would enhance the useability of the Nestabilities. I desire that their value goes even deeper. 

It is hard to see from this simple photograph, but I have uncovered a solid product that is soft white in color and Nestabilities will cut through it like buttah! It is not chipboard, but it is close to chipboard in it's ability to hold it's own. You will now be able to create fabulous projects using your Nestabiltiies and this fab new product! It works fantastic with the Bind-It-All (soon to arrive in our store Ü), binding rings, hinge clips, and many other bookbinding methods. I can just envision the fabulous Mini Scrapbooks, home decor projects, etc., that you all will be making shortly using your Nestability dies!!!

As you can see I stamped it, colored it (airbrushed and inked), layered it with patterned paper, pierced it, punched it, poked it - OK you get the gist of it - LOL!

Being it is a product that is not yet available to the mass markets we are private labelling it and hope to have it up on our store this coming week. We are also starting to work with others to figure out how to package it and make it available to all retailers. When we get it figured out we will most definitely share that information as well. So are you as excited as I am to have yet another way to use your Nestabilties??? I'm bouncing I tell you, bouncing!
