Recently I've been experimenting with some fun ways of using the new Art Magnetic Masking Material. I'm loving this unique and flexible product and for this design, have a great way to pair it up with Nestability dies to create a custom mask. By combining different shapes of Nestabilities together and cutting them out of the magnetic sheet I've created a mask that I can use time and time again to stamp an old fashioned Christmas ornament. Masking techniques are really easy to do and give a great new look to your stamps. Here's how I did it...
The Art Magnetic Masking Material is a very fine, bendable material that can be cut with scissors, paper trimmers or die cutting machines easily. I trimmed my reusable magnetic masking piece to 4.25" x 5.5" to card front size so that I could easily line up and completely mask my cardstock. Using the Magnetic Precision Mat Kit ruler, I marked off the center line of my mask to easily line up the dies straight when cutting them. This magnetic mat also works great when it comes time to stamp and sponge the design as the magnetic mask easily stays in place.
To design the shape of my custom mask, I arranged dies onto my mask until I was happy with how the cut negative space would look. When cutting the shapes, you'll need to cut each one out separately making sure that you have equal space on each side of the penciled in line. For this project, I used the Circle, Standard Small dies and the Ovals, Classic Small die set.
After my mask is ready to use, I laid it over a piece of Solar white cardstock. Using two different snowflakes from the Joyeux Noel stamp set by CHF, I stamped two of the snowflakes in Pool and Lettuce Adirondack Inks. Before sponging, wipe off the excess ink on the mask to cut down on color transfer.
To give the ornament some definition and shape, sponge the outside edges with Aqua Adirondack ink leaving the center with less ink. This makes the ornament to appear more three dimensional and natural to the eye. Remove mask. The mask can be reused again and again so give it a wipe off and store in a safe place.
After cutting the layer to size and planning my patterned paper background, I stamped the sentiment in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink. The gorgeous patterned paper is from the Cosmo Cricket Jolly by Golly 6x6 paper pad.
I stitched the edges of the layers in black thread to make them pop and then adhered to my Vanilla Bean card base.
I feel that every card looks better with an embellishment and this little Martha Stewart Scalloped Felt Ribbon and Christmas Twine add the finishing touch.
